Meet Jean Fuller Gest of Cuba Up Close: Travel and Tours in South Coast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Fuller Gest.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first traveled to Cuba many years ago with a food delegation and fell in love with the exciting and vibrant culture of the island and its warm welcoming people. Cuba Up Close was founded with the mission of introducing Americans to Cuba’s vibrancy. The island nation is unique and historically significant in its cultural roots. Cuba Up Close explores its uniqueness in its cultural and educational tours.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Cuba’s tourism infrastructure is yet to be fully developed so there have been many challenges. Cuba Up Close has worked diligently on securing the best possible accommodations and private restaurants for our tours. The lack of adequate internet on the island has added to our challenges as a US based operation, but we have recently added a Havana office to assist.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a locally based tour company specializing in travel to Cuba. All of our tours are customized and approved for legal travel to the island. Our tours offer the traveler the opportunity to fully understand and appreciate the culture and people of Cuba. We are locally connected and are well versed in travel to Cuba for the individual traveler. We can customize any type of itinerary and offer an “up close and personal” experience through meetings with farmers, business owners, officials, artists and dancers.

What were you like growing up?
I have always been interested in different cultures from a political and socioeconomic standpoint. I have also always been interested in architecture and art. Cuba has stood still in time and travelling to Cuba is similar to traveling back to the 1950’s. Colonial architecture is intact and art and music is everywhere.

She speaks of Cuba with so much passion…I love that. I’ve got a question, though, due to the restrictions and lack of communication /connection how will an American tourist feel protected or taken care of by your company?
