Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Boncore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Corina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I would say my love for interior design probably started as early as I can remember helping my mom decorate our house. She always went over the top on holidays & switched decor seasonally. In undergrad, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy & the inspiration with art, architecture & design was endless.
After obtaining a major in Psychology & minor in Criminal Justice, I followed my heart & went on to design school to get a degree in Interior/Architectural Design.
I worked as a lead designer for six years for a large company in Boston focusing on residential projects & new construction model apartments throughout Boston & surrounding cities. About two years ago, I decided to go out on my own & officially launched designloom. After meeting so many people that were just not happy in their home, I thought I had to get in on this process with my clients a bit earlier & became a licensed realtor with Gibson Sotheby’s so that I could help people find a place that feels like home from the start. Helping people get their home ready for resale has also been another huge part of my business.
Designloom also has a relocation branch that focuses on international students relocating to Boston for an education. ‘The Art of Relocation’ finds a rental or investment property for the student, furnishes it & has it ready for them upon arrival in Boston. This is all done by designloom standards & gets clients in a place they can call home within minutes of them touching down in their new city.
As a whole, designloom is a source for all things from finding a home too making a house feel like YOUR home.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think the decision to be self-employed after working for a huge company with a secure paycheck is the SCARIEST thing EVER! But I’m a huge believer in doing what you love & you’ll never work a day in your life. Life is too short to hate your job, it has such an impact on the quality of your life.
We are also living in a world of DIY & one of the biggest struggles is getting to help people before they waste too much money on doing things that they are not happy with.
From smaller projects like color consultations that people don’t think will make a huge impact – it does! Painting can be expensive & you definitely don’t want to do it twice. I always have people asking “what color is that on your wall, I love it” & I always explain that picking a color for your space has to be done in your space! After going through color theory courses, you find that the direction of the natural light coming in your home plays a huge factor in changing color once it’s in the room. Color even has an influence on your mood & appetite – trust me color is COMPLICATED!
Or larger projects like re-designing a kitchen… I have a lot of clients that initially think designers are all too expensive for them. In hindsight, I do this every day & a lot of the time a client is doing it for the first time. I always end up saving my client more money by assisting in projects then if they tried to do it on their own & even more so, it eliminates A LOT of time & stress.
In general, as much as we all love watching HGTV, projects are always more complicated then they look on TV & that’s where I come in!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with designloom – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Designloom is a source for all things from finding a home to furnishing it. Nothing brings me more joy than seeing a client transformation with a home & how it changes the client’s everyday life.
I truly focus on the client experience & making a home individual to the client. No two people are exactly alike & no two homes should be either. I love being able to make the home express the people that live there as well as having the homework with how the person living there functions every day.
You should be able to walk into your home after a long day at work & feel instant stress relief! An organization is also a HUGE part of the home & life function that we tackle. I never just talk about replacing everything, I like finding the solution for what you don’t like in your home & being able to assess the next best steps. My favorite part of my job is meeting a new client & learning about them, the possibilities are endless.
With my love to travel, I also have a small shop at the design studio where I sell items that I bring back from abroad. Sometimes, its textiles that I make into pillows & sometimes, it’s a vase or object – I like that my clients have the opportunity to have something that is one of a kind just like them!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love to travel & to incorporate that inspiration in my design work but BOSTON is my absolute favorite city in the world. Living in a place that has four seasons every year is unbeatable – we go from beach days to skiing without having to take a vacation.
I also love the reminder that Boston is one of the oldest cities in the US with the amazing character & architecture that surrounds us every day. Whenever I get the travel bug, I can head downtown to act like a tourist for a day & I’m instantly cured. For one of the oldest cities, Boston never gets old!
