Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Daly.
Colin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After spending a year teaching English and eating copious amounts of hummus in Israel I came back to Boston searching for some of the fluffy, fresh hummus I ate almost everyday while I was teaching. I went to every stores and tried every brand of hummus. Still, I wasn’t able to find the hummus that fit to my liking. So, I started playing around with different recipes, different chickpeas, different types of tahini, spices, and even finding the best sized lemon for the job. I made everyone I knew or met try my hummus and give me their direct feedback. At first I was nervous handing out my hummus to people – it was something I had been working on for months. But, soon the people I handed hummus to kept coming back and asking for more. So, Just Hummus was officially created. From making hummus out of a small ninja blender in my kitchen to now making two hundred pounds at a time we continue to make the very best hummus and plan to expand into local shops, delis and vegetarian shops throughout Boston for people to Spread, Dip or Devour.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Good things take time. To create a brand, a product and to start to get it out to people takes a lot of time. We have a great product – it’s fresh, healthy and really flavorful. We want everyone in Boston to try our hummus because we know that once they have it they won’t be able to buy any other hummus.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We make hummus. That’s it. It’s a really long process to make hummus well and we only focus on that. We make all different types of flavors – Original, Mint, Dill, Basil, Ginger Turmeric, Honey Habanero, Beet, Sweet Potato & Maple, Zesty Black Bean, and even a Melt Your Face Off Spicy Hummus using ghost peppers.
We are most proud that we can give our hummus to families and kids and feel good about handing out a healthy, preservative-free product that’s also fresh.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a talker – I love to connect with people and I think food is one of the best ways to see similarities with those around us. I wasn’t raised loving food – I was raised an athlete who knew food was important and directly contributed to your own well-being.
For a long time I wanted to work in a university and after searching I finally secured my dream job working at HBS. It wasn’t a good fit. It was too safe of a job. Too slow. I had too much energy and didn’t fit their perfect employee profile. After a year and a half I left to travel, to teach, to explore. It was while I was traveling I realized food is the connector of people. And great food is a great connector of people.
