Meet Claire Carino of Gold Gallery in SoWa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Carino.

Claire, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in the gallery business many years ago- more years than I’d like to admit, quite frankly! An industry that I thought I’d like to investigate after college turned out to be a passion that I continue to pursue every day.

In a series of hugely fortunate events, I met Adam Gold, a fellow entrepreneur that was interested in starting his own art gallery. I had the background in curation and sales, and he had the business acumen. I took a huge leap of faith, left my job on Newbury Street and after a few months of planning, we opened our doors with me serving as director. That was five years ago and neither of us has ever looked back.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every new business faces trials and tribulations and Gold Gallery has had growing pains with the best of them! That said, our successes have far outweighed any “failures” and every experience has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and move forward.

I’d say our biggest struggle, which in all honesty continues to be one, is tackling the common misconception that galleries are unwelcoming and accessible to only a select patron or consumer. This perception is simply untrue and we at Gold pride ourselves on treating every person who walks through our door with the respect we ourselves expect when visiting other establishments. In the market or just looking- come in and say hello and familiarize yourself with your local galleries…you never know what you might find!

Please tell us about Gold Gallery.
Gold Gallery specializes in emerging and mid-career contemporary art. We represent artists from all over the world, who work in a variety of media.

Our primary focus is painting, but we represent artists who work in mixed-media, photography and watercolor as well.

On a personal level, I am most proud of the relationships I’ve made with art lovers and collectors alike. I strive to go above and beyond for clients, whether they are purchasing their first piece of art or are seasoned collectors. There is nothing like hearing from a collector that they’ve never had an experience like the one they’ve had with Gold and I pursue that level of customer service every day. I’d like to think this sets us apart in some way.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That’s a hard question! I’m blessed to have had a very happy childhood spent in beautiful climates (my family moved from Southern California to Southern Florida when I was 13). We spent a lot of time outdoors and being active, enjoying where we were…so perhaps this isn’t a specific memory but certainly a mentality that I continue to embrace today.
