Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Fordyce.
Christine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I opened the business when I was 25 and it was just me in a small office space in Newton Centre doing just the electrolysis. After about a year I decided to go back to school to get my esthetic license. I then move to another location in Newton Centre but still not a street level location. Here I started to hire staff members and begin growing a solid business. I did a lot of coupons books and yellow pages to advertise. Then the location where I am in now opened up and I was scared but took the opportunity. I had to do a full build out and add plumbing to the whole space. It was a huge undertaking and consider it my first house that I built. At the height of the economy I had 22 employees and we were the first true “Day Spa” at that time. When 2008 hit, I did everything I could to stay in business. We did a lot of specials at very low prices and was grateful for everyone who came in to support us. We got through that period only to find that ‘Day Spas” are popping pop everywhere so it was time to give our business a facelift. In 2015 we changed our logo and updated our interior design and services that we offer. We brought in many new services to help our clients reach their goals with their skin and over all well-being. 23 years later we are going strong and I am grateful for my wonderful staff and all the loyal clients that have become more like family over the years. I can honestly say I have seen ever cycle of a business and I am still so thankful every time I hear the phone ring!
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I think I put it all in the first question but my biggest struggle was dealing with 2008. Business just came to a halt. I have to cut our budget drastically. I tried to be creative with ways to get people in the door and still treat themselves to treatments. We did a lot of the groupon like deals which in hindsight didn’t bring in more money (we actually lost money on those deals). What it did do was kept my staff busy and build up moral to keep them here during a tough time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We do Electrolysis, Laser Hair Removal and waxing. Skin care…many anti-aging facials including peels and HydraFacials. We do Massages, body polishes etc. We do spray tanning, makeovers, and a bunch of other special add ons. Manicure & Pedicures. Well sell lots of product for home care.
I am most proud of my staff. They are such a professional warm supportive group. I can go away for a week and they treat the spa as if it is their own. They are very good at what they do and truly care about their clients. I am very lucky to have such an amazing staff. The one thing that I have been consistent on in every interview is telling them that they need to be grateful for everyone who walks in the door. We are lucky to have their business!!!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think this is a great city for this type of business. It is hard to make it but if you give great service and keep moving with the times….you can do very well. It keeps all of us on our toes!!!!
