Meet Christina Inge of Thoughtlight in Financial District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Inge.

Christina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked in startups for over a decade, and always thought about starting my own company. I freelanced for years, but after parting ways with my last startup, I decided it was now or never. In late Spring of 2014, I hung out my shingle. We had one client, and it was me, my Mom doing my bookkeeping, and one intern. We now have worked with major universities, Fortune 500 companies, and scores of small businesses. Our team has grown to 16 people. It’s been a wild 3 years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the struggles has been valuing our work. Often, freelancers underbid or take on projects that aren’t a good fit. Learning to be selective in who we work with has led to stable growth.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Thoughtlight story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve always known there are better ways of implementing the technologies we use every day. From the systems teachers and students use to learn, to a small business’ website, to a Fortune 500 company’s employee training portal, people often struggle with the technology, because their “real job” is something else” teaching, being a manager, running a business. And yet, the technology that is supposed to help them becomes a barrier.

What we do is knock down those barriers. We make technology friendly, so you can get back to work. We have three branches: We offer full digital marketing services: web design, CRM implementation, SEO, paid search management, and content creation.

We also help universities and corporate training groups design effective online learning. We provide full production of online training programs: site design, designing for getting people trained efficiently, video production and editing, and helping you assess whether people are learning.

Finally, we produce conferences and workshops throughout the year to help people use technology effectively. The most popular is the Boston Online Marketing Meetup series. You can learn everything from Google Analytics to how to grow your email list, in a couple of hours.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
You make your own luck. You have to keep your eyes open and see opportunity where others see problems. That said, I am amazingly blessed. Boston is a great city to start a business, and I have been blessed with amazing advisors, friends, family, and a team that gets better every day.
