Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Juliani.
Chris’ motivation for becoming a massage therapist was to help people live richer, more fulfilling lives. In fact, she has been helping people for years, first as a social worker in Massachusetts and later in Minnesota where she worked with runaway and homeless teenagers and their families. Chris’ life was profoundly changed when she sought relief from the high stress of her own job and discovered massage therapy. She quickly realized how positive and enriching an experience massage was. This is how Chris found herself on the path to becoming a massage therapist herself, where she would be in a position to share the benefits of massage and help to improve the lives of many people.
Chris grew up in Westchester, New York and studied social work and psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. She received her massage therapy training at the Minneapolis School of Massage and Bodywork and soon thereafter became a certified member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. She has been a licensed and certified massage therapist since 1995.
Chris’ background in running and yoga assist her in working with others who exercise and those who aspire to exercise. Her energy, motivation and knowledge are exemplified in her work, which is creative, specific and individualized. Chris educates and explores with clients what they can do to reduce stress, tension and pain in their bodies. Chris is committed to enriching her life and her practice through such activities as meditation, personal growth work and ongoing massage training.
Along with practicing massage, Chris also manages the corporate chair massage business Boston Chair Massage: www.bostonchairmassage.com
In 2002, after Chris’ table clients consistently asked her to offer massages at their workplaces so she could share her talent with their staff, she decided to start Boston Chair Massage. Over the years Chris has worked with business coaches to help her learn more about running a business and she studied Human Resource Management at Curry College. Afterwards, Chris also received her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) credentials.
Chris lives in Medford with her wife and 6 year old twin girls.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. Especially in 2008 when the economy took a turn for the worse. I almost threw in the towel a few times.
Also, the constant struggle of balancing family life and work life.
And, managing massage therapists can be very challenging. Massage therapists often work at 2 or 3 different places to be able to make the living they would like.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Boston Chair Massage – what should we know?
We are a corporate massage company specializing in chair massage at events and offices. We are known for having the best massage therapists in the Boston area and also for being able to staff both large & last minute events. Our favorite events are when we have 7-10 massage therapists working together in a large room helping lots of people feel better at once.
I am most proud of keeping the business going over the years through lots of transitions and changes.
What sets us apart from others is that as the owner, I am also a massage therapist – so I know what it’s like on both sides. Our regular weekly clients appreciate that if one of our massage therapists is sick or can’t make it in, that I am always standing by as a backup massage therapist – so they can always count on their massages. Also, I am local to the business. There are many national companies that just call around in different states to find any massage therapist who might be available for a job. We are different because I know all of our staff well and also know that they will be able to provide a fabulous massage every time.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ll think more about this one and get back to you. Certainly, my wife, who has endless patience and allows me to work all the time, which is often required when you run your own business – mainly from home.
