Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Hobson.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Patchology is a skincare brand that develops fast, effective beauty products for the woman on-the-go.
We make quick fixes to help you look your best when you’re in a rush, multi-tasking daily essentials to care for your skin each day and special treatments so you can slow down, relax and get the most out of your me time. Our products are sold at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bluemercury, Sephora Europe and other retailers worldwide.
Over ten years ago, our founding team began developing innovative patch technologies for the medical field. Our company worked on an advanced nicotine patch, patches for ADHD, pain and other conditions. As we advanced our expertise in the delivery of ingredients, we realized that there were great ingredients in skincare that we could deliver better than traditional skincare products like creams and lotions, and the Patchology brand was born.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth!
The first question was whether anyone wanted to buy patches for skincare. After a few fits and starts, we proved that consumers loved the idea of patch-based skincare, but didn’t like our original prototypes. So we scrapped those and started over, eventually arriving Rejuvenating Eye Patches, which are still our #1 best selling product. Since that launch, we have been doubling revenue year-over-year, improving profitability and adding to a top-notch team.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Patchology – what should we know?
I think I said it most a couple of pages ago.
What makes me most proud is when I’m in a meeting with my colleagues and I realize how lucky we are to have attracted the talented people who really believe in our vision for a better way to do skincare with patches.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have an incredible group of investors and Board members who have supported us every step of the way. We have been very lucky to work with retailers like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom who initially saw our vision and believed in it enough to give us our first purchase orders. This validated the concept and really helped put the brand on the map.
But mostly, I have been lucky to work with amazing colleagues. Kathy St. Clair, our VP of Sales, is a true professional and is almost single-handedly responsible for our incredible distribution. Michael Jordan (not THAT Michael Jordan) is the most effective operations leader I’ve ever worked with. Jess McCarthy is our Senior Director of Digital Marketing and she does a great job of running our web, social and email presences. The big companies we deal with don’t realize that we are so small because of the outsized contributions of these people.
