Meet Catheryn Schoenfarber of Spirit Wellness Institute in Salem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catheryn Schoenfarber.

Catheryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been a massage therapist since 2004 when I graduated from The Palmer Institute of Massage and Bodywork. I have been working with clients one on one ever since. I own a Massage Therapy Practice called Spirit Wellness Massage where I work with a team of therapist providing massage therapy services. I feel incredibly blessed and inspired by my clients every day. To be able to hold healing space for another and to hold the highest intention for their wellbeing is a gift to the very heart of my soul. I have the privilege of watching people literally transform. I would say that more than anything else I help people to remember who they are. To remember how to connect to the joyful aspects of themselves so they can allow their wellbeing to flow.

It is this philosophy that inspired me to open The Spirit Wellness Institute. The Spirit Wellness Institute is a SOUL focused school with programs ranging from massage therapy certification to shamanic practitioner training. We offer workshops and curriculum that reflect our desire to deepen the knowledge between the physical and spiritual bodies in order to assist practitioners in coming into alignment to share their gifts of inner being with the world.

It is my hope to teach to the heart of who we are as human beings and to create a butterfly effect of integrity, pure intention and deep love for health and wellbeing that will spread one student at a time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a journey. I find that when I am deeply satisfied with who I am that my creative energy flows quite easily and that the work is seamless. It sometimes feels counter intuitive but I am at my best when I am having fun. I find that in order to really enjoy a streak of major productivity for my business I have to feel totally nourished, and happy first. So often times to prepare for a productive week I will steal some time to go get a massage, go for a run, go out with some friends and enjoy the feeling of FUN first. Then the work seams easy.

It’s really only when I look at my job as a responsibility and try to put busy work tasks first and deprive myself of what I love that I become unproductive!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Spirit Wellness Institute – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My favorite aspect of my work is watching the transformation of the client over the hour or hour and a half that I get to spend with them. It’s like watching a person remember who they are.

I am really good at holding space and intention for my clients. I also give a pretty damn good massage if I don’t say so myself! When my clients arrive I have already spent a great deal of time thinking about how I am going to see them for the healthy and vibrant beings that they are until they see it themselves. When I listen to their stories at the beginning of the session I understand that I am listening to their current state of being and that once they feel good in their bodies after a great massage their minds and spirits will follow. I understand very deeply that this all begins with being in a good place myself. I make it my priority to be what I seek to share with each of my clients.

I also have a very large amount of experience with my own healing. I have scoliosis that used to cause great discomfort in my body. I have learned so much about the way the body functions in my own search for health that I am eager to share knowledge with my clients, with other therapist and with my students about the structure of the body, the way the nervous system functions, the way the mind interprets pain etc. I am very knowledgeable and am always hungry to learn more!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am looking forward to my first semester teaching in the fall of 2017! It will be the first semester of our 650 hour massage therapy certification program. I have been teaching yoga for 8 years in addition to running my business and have found that I absolutely love to pass information along! I am so excited to get to share the heart and integrity of massage therapy with my students!
