Meet Cate Wall of Cate Wall Training in Hopkinton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cate Wall.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t grow up as an athlete. I didn’t run my first mile until my twenties. After college I worked in hospitality and the long hours and fast meals had me packing on pounds, feeling exhausted and stressed. When my husband’s job took us out of state I took the opportunity to switch careers and started working at a local gym. After my kids were born I was extremely uncomfortable in my own skin. I was carrying extra weight, and had very little strength- pushing my kids in a stroller would leave me out of breath and I constantly had aches and pains. One day I saw a photo of myself and almost didn’t recognize myself. I decided that I needed to make a change. I started working out at home, and gradually started running, strength training and going back to the gym. During my sons’ nap times I studied for my certified Personal Trainer exam. With my certification, when we moved back to Massachusetts I applied for a job at Orangetheory Fitness and was hired as a coach and Regional Trainer. I have had the chance to coach hundreds of people under the orange lights! I also coach kid’s classes at a local Crossfit box, Crossfit Resilience. Working with people inspires me and seeing people achieve things they never thought possible makes it so my “job” never feels like work. I started my own personal training business so that I might have the chance to work one on one with women who, like me, are busy but are inspired to make a change.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With two kids and a spouse who travels life is always changing and throwing new things at you. Making the time for my own workouts and eating well is always a struggle. I have dealt with injuries including one at the very start of my journey that almost derailed me. I deal with the same temptations and bad habits that my clients do. At the end of a long day having a bowl of cereal for dinner is sometimes the most enticing option. But my approach is to “show the struggle”- that sharing my ongoing journey with my clients and class members is more beneficial than a perfect facade.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am proud to work with women and families who are making big changes to their lives one day at a time. Focusing on women building up other women, I have developed a small online community. The community not only inspires women to show one another their real life struggles but also inspires them to support one another and embrace a more positive outlook about their bodies, accomplishments and every single effort they make toward their goals.

What were you like growing up?
I was a total theater geek and bookworm (and still am). Although these things seem at odds with my profession, I love that it sets me apart and helps me get through to others that you can become an athlete at any age.
