Meet Cat Quintino of Boston Barber & Tattoo Co. in North End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Quintino.

Cat, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am from Lisbon, Portugal and in 2014 I moved to Boston and shortly thereafter began tattooing.

Moving so far from home and tattoos where never a part of the plan. Sometimes a leap of faith is necessary so you don’t spend the rest of your life wondering ‘what if’.

Went to college where I learned that contemporary art is actually philosophy, and although I can find its charms, it became clear to me that wasn’t going to be a fulfilling creative life for me.

The world of tattoos struck me as mysterious and intriguing, and I simply had to know more about it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is nothing smooth about learning how to tattoo. The machine is loud and shaky, people move and flinch while you’re trying so hard to get the basics down. It’s hard enough to even get someone to agree to teach you, especially in a new place where you don’t really know anybody.

It was not an easy journey, but Boston was very welcoming and kind.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Boston Barber & Tattoo co. – what should we know?
I do all kinds of tattoos, from black and grey to crazy cover ups, whatever the project I decide to jump in next I have to sure it’s something that I will be able to craft well. There is a little pressure when your canvas is going to walk out the door with a doodle you’ve made.

I am also known for being a cat lady and, overall, a little strange.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence and boredom. Boredom is essential for creativity. No one feels the need to create when you’re entertained. Persistence so you don’t settle for less, and be sure you do the best work you possibly can.
