Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Murfin.
Carol, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m originally from Montreal, Canada. I moved here after I graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1996. I was recruited to work in Rhode Island, as there was a shortage of physical therapists in the US at the time. Being just 21 years old, I also wanted a 6 month adventure away from home. Twenty one years later I find myself still living in Boston, MA and loving this city. I worked in various physical therapy settings including acute care rehab, home care and outpatient rehabilitation. I then successfully started two outpatient practices, still viable today, for other owners. In 2005, I graduated from Babson College with a MBA (Master in Business Administration). My past work experience and my business degree gave my husband and I the confidence to open our own practice in 2011.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Initially one of my biggest struggles was trying to juggle the many responsibilities of being a business owner and treating patients, while simultaneously having a family. Time management was key. Luckily I have an energetic personality.
I also found myself in the highly competitive environment of Boston Metro West with many well established clinics surrounding mine and large, close-by hospitals also offering physical therapy services. Luckily the town in which I decided to establish my practice is very loyal and has been incredibly supportive of small businesses such as mine. Patient referrals make up 80% of my practice.
Back to You Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Back to You Physical Therapy is an outpatient physical therapy practice established in 2011 serving the surrounding communities of Sherborn, Dover, Natick, Framingham, Holliston, Medway, Millis, Norfolk and Wellesley. We provide outpatient physical therapy for neck and back pain, arthritis, tendonitis, sprains and strains, balance disorders, Fibromyalgia, foot pain and jaw pain. We also provide treatment after orthopedic surgery. We are spine specialists and foot specialists. We have experience working with equestrians and dancers. Our programs include a spine program, sports program and fall prevention program. We accept most insurances. We also provide private pay physical therapy sessions which include sports/therapeutic massage, running analysis, foot assessments for orthotics, and Yoga and Pilates classes. We provide sports injury prevention seminars to local high schools and middle schools.
Our Pilates and Yoga classes are designed to be a transitional program for a person who has been injured to feel comfortable returning to regular exercise in a supervised environment. Pilates is a great core strengthener for patient/clients with hip injuries and back injuries. Yoga is great for all diagnosis and incorporates strengthening, stretching and breath work as well as relaxation and stress management.
What sets us apart? We use technology to our advantage. We offer video home exercise programs to all our patients which can easily be viewed on their iPhones/smart phones. We develop close, trusting relationships with patients, get to know them and their families, care about community and donate our time and expertise for prevention training seminars. Our clinic space is a clean, tranquil, soothing, sunny environment in which to get well.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have to say it has been the many patients I have met and helped throughout the years. My profession is so very rewarding. The feeling that I made a difference in someone’s life, especially at times when they were most vulnerable, is unlike any other. Of the most memorable, I helped an amputee take his very first steps with a prosthetic. I helped save a man’s life by diagnosing a deep vein thrombosis in his calf, which could have been fatal, by sending him to the hospital for treatment. I suspected a spinal tumor on a young girl who was sent to me for tight calf pain, and she had emergency surgery the next day. My oldest patient was 105 years old. I learned so much about living life from him. I’ve helped paraplegics, stroke victims. I’ve enjoy countless hours of conversations with many patients with many ailments. I learned something from each one.
