Meet Breanne McGinness of Fitness Balanced in Wakefield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanne McGinness.

Breanne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Fitness balanced was born from a desire to see women change their opinions of what “fit” is, and finally begin to view themselves as beautiful, powerful, and strong. We are hoping to shift the industry in a body positive direction, where all people are able to love their bodies. We are also passionate about people finding a form of fitness they enjoy to do, and excelling in that arena.

Several years ago, Jenna and I met while working together as managers at a gym. We became instant friends when we realized we both wanted to see a change in how women were treated, and even more so, how women treated their bodies. At the time, we laughed and joked about someday opening a fitness studio that was about more than just a number on the scale, a certain body type, or the “all or nothing” mentality. Fast forward to 2015, where Jenna and I knew we had to impact lives. We found a space, purchased equipment, contacted the best instructors in the area, and started our journey as Fitness Balanced.

Has it been a smooth road?
We have been fortunate enough to have a rock solid community of women behind us, who share our values, and have been members since day 1. However, it hasn’t always been easy connecting and marketing to people in the area. As a studio that believes that life is best lived in moderation, we don’t push any quick fixes or weight loss challenges. Instead, we try to teach our members one day at a time that they are worth so much more than they may have believed. We also work with women on building strength and being downright awesome. This type of work is so rewarding, as we have personally seen a change in each and every individual that has come through our doors.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fitness Balanced is a women’s only fitness studio located right on Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield MA. We are a body positive studio that focuses on building strength, endurance, long lasting friendships, and a respect for what your own body is capable of doing.

We are a small studio that keeps our class numbers low in order to allow our members the attention they deserve. We offer classes early in the morning, mid-day, and in the evenings. We have a wide variety of classes from spinning, yoga, and barre to boxing, TRX, and muscle pump.

We also offer the community “ladies night out” every few weeks, where women can come on Friday or Saturday evening to move like “hot mammas” or learn how to belly dance. Our special events also includes a yoga with essential oils.

As a co-owner of Fitness Balanced, I am most proud of the community we have built around this idea of loving yourself while still working on yourself. We have created values that will be long lasting in our member’s lives, teaching them that they are able to be strong and fierce, regardless of what the scale says. I believe we are set apart from most gyms because we know all of our members, their goals, their backgrounds, and we truly care about their success.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Being just outside the city, we have been extremely happy with where we chose to place our business. Wakefield is an amazing community! For someone just starting out, I would absolutely recommend starting out here. There are so many diverse populations to reach in this area, you can truly make an impact with even the smallest space.
