Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert A. Lenahan.
Robert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a native of the seaside community of Montauk, Long Island, N.Y.
I graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the New York Institute of Technology.
I was fortunate to start my career with the prestigious “Hamptons” New York Architect Francis Fleetwood in East Hampton, NY.
In 1998, I partnered with Francis Fleetwood and James McMullan to form Fleetwood, Lenahan & McMullan LLC.
In 2008, I moved with my wife Jeannie and our family to Jeannie’s hometown of Portsmouth N.H.
I retained my position as partner with FLM Architects and became Senior Architect / Consultant with Fleetwood and McMullan Architects LLC by years end.
In 2009 Robert A. Lenahan Architect AIA was formed in Portsmouth, N.H.
Robert A. Lenahan Architect AIA is licensed in New York, New Hampshire and Maine.
I am registered with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Upon graduating in 1984 from the New York Institute of Technology the economic climate was slow.
I had sent out 250 resumes nationwide only to receive 2 responses. I was fortunate to start my architectural career with the prestigious “Hamptons” New York Architect Francis Fleetwood in East Hampton, NY.
In the year 2001 the economy took a downturn and Francis Fleetwood and Associates downsized from 10 associates to just myself and Mr. Fleetwood.
I retained my position with Francis Fleetwood’s office and became Partner in 1998 forming the Architectural Firm of Fleetwood, Lenahan and McMullan LLC.
In late 2007, I moved with my wife Jeannie and our family to Jeannie’s hometown of Portsmouth NH.
I retained my position as partner with the FLM Firm. I traveled back and forth to NY for 9 months in 2008 all while designing and participating in Construction Supervision on 8 projects.
The economy was beginning to slowly erode over the course of 2008. I was asked to relinquish my partnership with the firm and become a Senior Consultant in October of 2008. By years end, I was terminated from the Firm after 24 years.
Robert A Lenahan Architect AIA PLLC was formed July 1st 2009. Because I was primarily working in the state of New York I was unknown to the local environment of northern New England.
Over the last 8 years I have had the wonderful opportunity to work for various clientele in New Hampshire, Maine and the “Hampton’s” New York.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Robert A. Lenahan Architect AIA – what should we know?
I am the sole proprietor of Robert A. Lenahan Architect AIA PLLC. I employ only myself in this endeavor. I am located in the seaside city of Portsmouth, N.H.
I am well versed and studied in the shingle style vernacular, seaside architecture and camp style. My strengths and passions are related to custom high end residential architecture.
My design philosophy draws upon classic and indigenous styles, blending modern ideas and technology with classic timeless Architecture. I uphold and strive for the highest standard in quality and style for custom homes and renovations in Long Island, New York’s “The Hamptons”, New Hampshire and Maine.
Robert A. Lenahan Architect AIA has 30 years of experience in Architecture and Design and is privileged to help create beautiful homes for many wonderful clients, I believe that the key to the finest projects is a close collaboration between the client and their Architect. Each house is exhaustively detailed and designed with the lifestyle and wishes of the client in mind before its creation. The main goal has always been to combine modern living within a traditional design.
I like to think that what I am known for and most proud of is that I try to give every client everything I’ve got.
I am available to my client’s and contractor’s anytime day or night. When a project is done I want my client’s to know that I am their friend and their Architect for life.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife Jeannie and our children deserve so much credit for knowing how much I throw myself into each project.
The countless meetings out of state and Saturday’s spent at the office are trying on any relationship. My family has supported me through it all.
Francis Fleetwood was a wonderful mentor, partner and friend. He has passed and is missed.
Every client that I have worked for is special to me in their own way. I treasure each for their trust in me, their friendship, their recommendations and their reviews. I love my Architectural family.
