Today we’d like to introduce you to Billie Weiss.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Billie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In high school, I developed a casual interest in photography when my dad gave me his old Pentax film camera to fool around with. What started as a hobby turned into a passion in college, when I joined the student newspaper and started shooting on campus every day. With that portfolio, I was lucky enough to land a photography internship with the Baltimore Orioles. My experience with the Orioles solidified my desire to pursue a career in sports photography. My work with the Orioles connected me to the Boston Red Sox a few years later. After completing a photography internship with the Red Sox in 2012, I was asked to stick around as the part-time staff photographer. Part-time eventually led to full-time, and seven years later, I’m still here, now working in the role of Manager of Photography for the ball club.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I look at my career as a whole, it’s been smooth. I’ve achieved many of the goals I’ve set out for myself, both as a student and as a professional. That being said, I’ve worked really hard to ensure that those goals and important career steps actually happened. Since I started on this photography path, I’ve been grinding every step of the way – perfecting the craft, reading and watching and listening as much as I can, networking with the right people, taking on projects and jobs as much as possible, and working long days, even longer nights, and weekends. In this business, I believe you have to work very hard to get to where you want to be. Nothing is given to you!
Please tell us about Boston Red Sox.
As the Manager of Photography, I’m responsible for overseeing all things photography in relation to the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park. Our staff shoots Boston Red Sox games, portraits of the team, player events in the community, and special events like Spring Training, the All-Star Game, and the playoffs. We also serve as the house photographers for Fenway Park, so we document the concerts and jewel transformation events like Football at Fenway and The Winter Classic that happen at the park. I think our staff does an incredible job of documenting the team and life at Fenway Park. The photos we take create a visually stunning representation of the team and ballpark, while at the same time providing an accurate historical record that will be used and referenced for years to come. On a personal level, I like to think I shoot with a clean, vibrant style that lends well to marketing for companies and brands.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing baseball every summer with my friends!
