Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Marshall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bill. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a teenager who enjoyed taking photos more than I did business school at a local community college, so I dropped out and enrolled at the New England School of Photography. At the age of 20, I graduated and decided to start my own business. It took a lot of downs to finally find the way up, it’s been a pretty incredible ride so far.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, no it hasn’t. I was too young and immature to take things seriously when I first started. When I decide to finally focus my energy the recession hit. I had no credit, I couldn’t take out a loan or open a credit card, for that matter. Competitive camera gear is expensive, so I had to work odd jobs in kitchens around the city.
As my time was distracted by other things, I started to burn out on photography and that feeling was pretty unsettling. I took some time and traveled, came back and refocused my efforts and slowly worked on my portfolio and business and eventually I learned from my past and have made things work.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bill Marshall Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in wedding photography. I strive for a more authentic and organic approach to capturing these big days. A lot of my clients say they like my “darker and moodier” photographs. Those are my favorite images, when clients are engaged in an intimate bubble and I can focus on natural light and how to highlight those emotions. That’s probably what helps to separate me from others, as well.
I’m most proud of the connections with my clients I’ve made over the past twelve years. I start out capturing such a special moment of their lives and then I get to see them grow and have children and blossom into these awesome families, it’s really rewarding!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
A lot of people have helped along the way. My family supported my choice to drop out of business school and pursue photography. My friends helped me in the early days by building websites for me, being models so I could practice, and just being a source of positivity.
I worked a lot with Phil Fox of Phil Fox Photography when I started out. He was a big influence on me as a photographer and business owner. Lastly would be my wife. She’s been along my side for a big part of this journey. She challenges me to be a better person and that’s had a big impact on my craft.
