Meet Bianca DeStefano of Hair by Bianca

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca DeStefano.

Bianca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is one of a lot of sweat, tears, and fights along with much passion and determination. I grew up with a very strong work ethic being involved with my father’s Italian bakery. My weekends, after school and holidays, were spent working many early hours alongside my brothers and family to continue the success of the business. I was always working with my hands and dealing with customers in a very fast paced environment.

When I graduated from high school and started college, I quickly learned that wasn’t the right path for me. I decided to try cosmetology school. I had always had an interest in it, and absolutely fell in love with it! Starting my career was definitely a challenge. For example, trying to find the right salon. I was lucky enough to have the experience of working with some great stylists who taught me so much through the years but being an assistant for many of those years was tough. Often, I would think to myself how someday I couldn’t wait to be one of those stylists that were booked all day even for weeks out in advance!

For many years I came home in tears after a long day of washing hair, cleaning and tired of not being able to practice what I loved. In the end, it all paid off. My dreams truly came true. I found a salon in Newton that felt like home to me. I am booked out for weeks at times, have built relationships with clients that I enjoy spending time with! As an artist, I have much experience in color and cutting along with extensions and keratin treatments. Through the years, I have also discovered how much I love doing hair for weddings and events. Being a part of someone’s special day, creating their vision, I feel so lucky to be a part of that!

A few months ago I came to a crossroad when the salon I was working for had no choice but to close its doors. I could have gone to another salon, that would have been the easy route. Instead, it was time for the next step. Now, I have my own studio space where I get to be my own boss. I couldn’t be happier with where all the challenges have to lead me and can’t stress enough to so many people not to give up! If you want something bad enough, you will have it.

Every day I get to go to work and do what I love in a space I helped to create. I will continue to learn, strive to be the best I can be for whoever sits in my chair! No better feeling than being able to make someone feel beautiful and leave with a smile on their face.

Has it been a smooth road?
Lots of struggles along the way. First starting out, I was extremely overweight and trying to find a job in a fashion towards industry was a struggle, and I am very happy to say that I overcame that, and was also able to lose half the weight of what I am today. Trying to build a clientele took me always six years.

Lots of different salons, trying to find the right fit in a place that gave me the opportunity to grow. Many times I wanted to quit, though I couldn’t make a career out of it. My mom kept pushing me, encouraging me that I had the talent and in the end, I would succeed.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am so thrilled to be able to say that I do hair under my own business. I think what sets me apart from so many is the fact that I really try to listen to what someone wants. I’m not going to lie and tell you-you’re going to look just like your inspiration picture because not everyone has the same hair type, skin tone, eye color.

So much goes in to play when it comes to creating a look and I take pride in being able to work with a client to create a look that is individualized for them and something they can recreate when they leave. Before I begin creating, I make sure that I am on the same page with what the client is looking for and their expectations.

So many times people sit with me and tell me how grateful and appreciative they are that I’ve listened and also took the time to guide them in the right direction with patience.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Boston, and I love everything about this area. Except for the snow, but some days, even the snow can be so pretty. I think it’s a great city for this business. A large diversity of people who have all different visions, likes, wants.

You’re really presenting with the opportunity to go to different areas of Boston and surrounding to create whatever you may specialize in.

I’ve had the pleasure of Bianca being my hair stylist for several years and have never been disappointed when I walk out the door. I feel completely confident to give a new customer a recommendation to use her services since I am sure they will love whatever she does for them.

I have been going to Bianca for many years now. From the start she has been an exceptional hairdresser, always listening, giving great advice and using her expertise in color and cutting to provide her clients with great service
I always leave the salon feeling great because my hair looks terrific! She is also extremely accommodating when time is of the essence. I would recommend her highly to anyone looking for a great hairdresser
