Meet Ben Barkan of HomeHarvest in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Barkan.

Ben Barkan founded HomeHarvest in 2008 using just a bicycle and a shovel. The intention has always been to help connect people with nature and use edible gardens as a way to teach people about sustainability, regenerative agriculture, and appreciation of the natural world.

In the off season, Ben has been inspired by traveling and working on more than 30 organic farms in New England, California, Oregon, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and Costa Rica. We now have hundreds of edible gardens that we proudly stand behind.

Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest part is maintaining a healthy work/life balance in the midst of company growth. It’s important to manage jobs smoothly and maintain excellent communication with customers. This often comes at the expense of a lack of personal time, especially in the spring. This is why it’s so helpful that we all love the work that we do.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
WE LOVE WHAT WE DO

Our talented team of gardeners, designers, stone masons, carpenters, welders, educators, and farmers are passionate about creating edible landscapes.

Our mission is to transform urban spaces into attractive and regenerative ecosystems.

We love when our inviting gardens help connect people to the natural world and their food source.

Based in Boston, we design and build edible landscapes, vegetable garden raised beds, and often incorporate medicinal & ornamental plants, stone masonry, metal work, and carpentry.

We educate about self-sufficiency, nutrient-rich produce, and the abundant rewards of holistic land stewardship.

We get excited when we help people grow their own food. There’s immense satisfaction in tending to your plants, watching them thrive and mature, harvesting the bounty, and sharing the harvest with friends and family. It’s one of the most positive things we can do for our environment and ourselves.

Gardens, especially edible gardens, help to facilitate connection with nature. This mindset of sustainability and ability to see our natural world with more reverence and gratitude is why we do what we do.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! Boston is a wonderful place to start a business. The seasonal nature of working outside here in cooler weather can be challenging, but the community makes it worth it. It seems like anytime we need assistance, there is a vibrant community in Boston that wants to help us achieve our dreams.
