Meet Barbara Sawin of Davis & Sawin Florist in West Roxbury

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Sawin.

Barbara, owner and Manager of Davis & Sawin Florist began her career in the florist business at age 12. She worked for Mrs. Ada Davis and Ms. Jean Davis at Davis Florist in Brighton through High School and college, learning the craft of floral design from these two remarkable women.

Together with her husband George, they opened B&G Sawin Florist in Brighton in 1988. There, they developed a reputation as being the best shop in town, winning awards such as the “Master Designer” designation and the “Gold Medal” at the New England Spring Flower Show, all while establishing themselves as a business that gives back to the community.

In December of 2015, she joined forces with West Roxbury’s premier florist, Jack Davis Florist (Ada’s son). Established in 1949 they also have won numerous awards including the “President’s Award for Excellence” at the New England Flower Show.

Now Davis and Sawin Florist, she leads a staff of local artisans in creating the most spectacular arrangements for the most discerning customers. They pride themselves in well established relationships with customers.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting our business in the neighborhood in which we grew up helped. We felt well established right away having known so many families. Our business really relies on relationship with our customers. We have created at this point, wedding flowers for second generation brides. We share in the life’s events of people who come into our shop, their weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, births and bereavement. Having close ties to the community really worked for us.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full-service florist, meaning we specialize in all types of floral design. We have lots of people stopping in to select special blossoms in a handtied bouquet to take home or give as a gift. We provide beautiful floral arrangements for weddings, proms, graduations, corporate events and funerals.

We are most proud that we still hand select all of our flowers so that we can provide the best and freshest blossoms to our customers. We love what we do and think that reflects on how we approach all aspects of the business and the way we interact with our clients.

What were you like growing up?
I was shy, and quiet. I always loved art and creating things.
