Meet Barbara Pearlman and Bryan Hoffman of Cambridge Scientific Products in Watertown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Pearlman and Bryan Hoffman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Barbara and Bryan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1997, I worked for another company who was selling laboratory equipment throughout the United States as a buyer. The company was not successful and I saw a lot of potential. I wanted to improve upon this and wanted to start with the Boston/Cambridge area. As a previous buyer, I knew there was a lot of equipment available. During the first year, I couldn’t keep up with the demand. Having two phones to my ear at the same time and an active fax machine, I knew that I needed more help. My brother, an accountant, was looking for a new job and I brought him in. He helped make our first website which just kept the business rolling. We were lucky enough to find Gaylord, our head technician. He’s one of the best in the business in servicing equipment. His technical ability in a variety of laboratory equipment allowed us to stand out.

Now that I had an initial employee base and support to fix equipment, it was time to start bringing in more business. Everyday, we would go door to door to Lab Managers to spread our name and make Cambridge Scientific into the business we are 21 years later.

Bryan, our Director of Sales, joined us 8 years ago. He has been fundamental in pushing us forward in the Microscope and Analytic Portions of our company. His determination and hard work has also kept us organized and able to support the business that we all enjoy working at.

The future is Bright for Cambridge Scientific and we are also excited for our next Venture, Arsenal Lab Space. Two years ago, we started by providing an incubator space for start up companies and filled it with our equipment from Cambridge Scientific. It has been an incredible success and we are looking forward to our imminent expansion

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When running a business, the most difficult process is always struggling to be the leader that my company needs. Having never hired anyone before this, it was an uphill battle to learn the right type of people to have by my side. Through the years, we have honed our ability to hire the right people for the right positions. It is sometimes difficult being the leader my staff needs but I always try to lead by example.

The demand placed on us by the increased complexity of equipment requires a special kind of technician. We are blessed to have the ones in house currently but always keep an eye out for additional qualified help.
