Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Augello.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was working in a local hospital as a therapist on a psychiatric unit. I attended the hospital CPR training and really enjoyed the class. I thought it looked like a fun job, teaching life-saving skills. I approached the instructor about how to get started and he ended up being a mentor for me as well as a lifelong friend. At first, I gave classes as a supplement to my job.
Eventually, I realized I could have a new full-time career as a CPR trainer and quit my job. My model has always been to provide both exceptional training and exceptional customer service. Many of my customers return to me, and many refer me to their friends and colleagues. My work gives me a lot of fulfillment, I enjoy teaching and I get to play a small part in saving lives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been smooth. There was frustration when the business didn’t grow as fast as I would have liked. Also, my previous experience was as a therapist and I had no business background. Catching up to financial practices and marketing strategies was a big challenge. I had to ask for help, do research, and make mistakes, and eventually, I learned different facets of the business.
Health Ed Of New England – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The business is Health Ed Of New England, and our main mission continues to be providing exceptional training in CPR and FIRST AID. We also sell ‘how to’ business manuals to those starting out as CPR instructors. And recently we added PUBLIC SPEAKING workshops to our offerings. I’m very excited about adding this to our services. I know many people have anxiety about public speaking. I believe this is a way I can help others conquer their fears and reach their goals.
I’m most proud of the way we interact with our clients. I strive to provide the best customer service. I know that there are other training companies who don’t return calls promptly, who have rigid rules and who charge high prices. One of my most important goals is to always BE NICE! A simple thing, but not always done!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There are many ways to view success, both financial and by looking at more intangible criteria. Financially, I set certain goals for quarterly and annual profits. But I’m also looking at how clients evaluate us, how they refer others to us, and whether they return to us for their training.
I’m listening to comments my clients offer as they leave and how satisfied they seem. I’m hearing their stories of how they saved lives after attending our classes. This means real success to me. Ideally, these intangibles line up with the financial milestones.
