Meet Ava Nguyen of Boston VIP List in Allston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ava Nguyen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I went to a typical state school in Massachusetts called UMass Dartmouth. It was an hour away from my house and affordable and provided enough distance to be considered “independent” and “live away from home” all while being close enough to go home whenever I wanted to. I studied Finance and accounting my first two years because my mom wanted me to be an accountant and even interned at an investment bank. It wasn’t until the end of my internship and the end of my 2nd year that I really started to realize that I had the attention span of a goldfish, couldn’t sit still for long and was too chatty to be in a cubicle.

However I had already completed 2 years of business classes and if I were to switch my major, I’d have to be in school for another 2 years which would make me worse than a “super senior.” I switched to marketing, didn’t really know what it was but it was the only other major in business that didn’t seem so boring that I’d hate working for the rest of my life in that field. Fast forward 4 years, school ended, I graduated and was thrown into the real world, great. I had no real goals in college nor did I have any idea on what I wanted to do or what direction I wanted to go in life. My school didn’t do a really good job of showing me the way either.

So I graduated and ended up managing my aunt’s nail salons for a few months before a girl came into the salon and asked me what I wanted to pursue in my future. I told her I had no idea and was going to wing it until I worked something out. She told me that she just applied to a company called Boston VIP list and that it seemed like a fun job because it was related to nightlife and entertainment. I looked the company up and saw that they ran “Sofa king Fridays” at Royale. I had gone to a couple of these shows and I love that type of music so I emailed the company and applied for an internship. I came in and interviewed and got a position in the company. I interviewed with the hopes of getting an internship but he asked me if I wanted to be a VIP host so I was doing that for a little bit but my schedule was too hectic because I was still balancing managing the nail salons while doing this job so on some days I was working from 8am-2am.

Eventually, I quit my nail salons and started working for Boston VIP list full time. My VIP host position didn’t last too long before my boss realized that I was highly advanced in graphic design so I started doing all the designing for all our event flyers. Then he realized I was really reliable so I started managing all the staff as well, then he realized that I could do a lot of stuff that benefited the company so he made me Director of Marketing & Promotions so now I pretty much do it all. I love my job, even though I never saw myself working in a cubicle, I ended up in a cubicle and it’s a pretty neat cubicle.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a smooth road. The only challenges that I’ve really struggled with were when I was balancing working at Boston VIP list while managing the salon. Those days I worked from 8am-2am and was tired all the time and didn’t really have any time to do anything else. Even now, the challenges that I would say that I face is that I work every Friday and Saturday so I can’t really hang out with friends or make plans on the weekend anymore. Other than that, I would say I’ve been pretty blessed because I was really lost and lacked direction all throughout college and my life was just one big question mark for a really long time but in the end, it all worked out for me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Boston VIP List – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Boston VIP list is an event planning company that specializes in entertainment services. We collaborate with major clubs, bars, and lounges in the Boston area and create big events which help these places generate higher amounts of people who show up. Our goal is to provide people with a premiere nightlife experience through special VIP packages. These VIP packages provide people with a unique experience that they wouldn’t have been able to get on just a regular night out in town. I am most proud of how far we’ve gone as a company, we’ve completed many major events and have collaborated with big-name clubs and big-name DJs and have made a big name for ourselves in the Boston area.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love most about Boston is that it is very diverse and very lively. Although it isn’t quite on the same level as a major city such as New York, it is very similar in energy and vibes. There is always something to do and always someplace to go. People are always moving fast and hurrying to get to where they want to go. It’s a quick pace and something is always happening. The thing I like least about the city is how expensive it can get. Another thing is that most places are closed at 2 am so if you wanted to do something after 2 am, your options are limited.
