Meet Ashley O’Doherty of Fisher Experience in Braintree

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley O’Doherty.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was little, I had always wanted to become a hairdresser. From styling hair at cheerleading competitions to helping a friend get ready for a night out, it was always what I wanted to do. I starting working in a salon when I was 16 and never stopped. When it came time to graduate high school, I wanted to go directly to cosmetology school. After talking with my parents, we decided it was best to get a college degree first. I was so eager to finally attend cosmetology school that I graduated with my Bachelors in Business Management in just three and a half years and then immediately applied to cosmetology school.
My first salon job as a licensed cosmetologist was on the south shore. In six years I was there, I learned how to not only become a great hairdresser but also how to build relationships with clients. I was able to take many classes to learn my craft, from Las Vegas to Miami to New York. My journey then continued on to Fisher Experience. I have been with Fisher for three years now. Fisher Experience has taught me a lot about myself and others. The women I work with are so inspiring and I feel like I am constantly learning with all the different dynamics I come across. Beth and Bruce Fisher have given me the opportunity to grow and learn as a woman, a mother, and a hairdresser.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any career, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Mastering your craft takes long hours and dedication. The biggest struggle I had while developing my craft was understanding consultations. It takes a lot of experience to know the right questions to ask during a consultation. A woman might sit in your chair and tell you she likes ash blonde hair color but then proceeds to show you pictures of golden blonde hair. Having a thorough consultation, knowing what to ask, and being able to explain the differences will set you up for success. I love having the ability to say that I have overcome my struggles and can perform a thorough and well-executed consultation and service.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have been a hairdresser for over eight years. Hair color has always been my passion. I love how much of an impact you can make in just two short hours, whether it be to enhance someone’s natural color with a balayage or to create a big change with some gorgeous highlights. One of my specialties is foiling. I love the different effects you can create with foils. You can make someone very blonde, a soft look with a shadow effect, and even one of my favorites: grey blending. My technique is very natural but also can create an impact where needed.

At Fisher Experience, we are always developing new stylists fresh out of school. I am honored to be able to share my knowledge with these talented stylists who are hungry to learn as much as they can, just as I am.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is a great city for hairdressing. There are so many different salons in our area that are great depending on your personal style. For someone starting out, I would recommend they do their research and find a salon that is unique to them and will offer an exorbitant amount of education. Both in the salon and out of salon education is the best way to develop as a hairstylist and many salons around here offer that. No matter how long you have been in the industry, education is very important since trends are forever changing.

Ashley is a terrific hairstylist who cares about her clients and my granddaughter, who is one of her clients, thinks the world of her and loves the finished product. Keep up the great work Ashley.
