Today we’d like to introduce you to Arthur Liebl.
Arthur, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1995 I moved to Brazil working as a rotary-press technician. While in Brazil I saw the importance of linguistic services having to, not only learn Portuguese myself but also witnessing the importance of comprehensive communication between two countries that speak different languages. When I returned to the USA I opened my first linguistic services company: Interpreters Brasil studied hospital management at Ashford University and then in 2010 my wife and myself opened Interpreters Associates with a view to providing linguistic services to enterprises both in Brazil as well as here in the USA.
Today, in the capacity of Vice President I am responsible for the organization, coordination and execution of all-conference interpreting of the company. In the United States, I am responsible for contracts with Harvard, Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education, LASPAU, Harvard Legal School, Yale, Boston College, Babson College, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Disney Institute and Reebok. In South America: La Asociación Civil de Investigación y Desarrollo en Salud (ACINDES) IPEMED, SEMESP, UNISAL, Intercambio Global, various departments of Brazilian government and EXPERTISE Educacao.
My motto is that “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.” Aristotle. Experience and the passion to act right are what produce professionals in the field. I strive to drive this idea into each and every one of our staff: passion and delivery, passion and delivery. As a result, our team brings sterling results to the client.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a business owner is never a road without struggles. It is how you face issues that matter. All companies err either by default or due internal issues. What you do when errors are committed is what brings you to the next level. The wonderful thing about being a business owner is that there is always something to learn and improve upon within your establishment.
I remember when we first started offering simultaneous interpreting for conferences here in Boston. Our biggest error was the lack of qualified interpreters and we suffered on one occasion for not having the right people in place. Once you err though, you need to let the determination to never repeat this error stay with you and be embedded in your fabric as a company owner. I live by the adage: “you fool me once, shame on you… you fool me twice, shame on me.” We need to learn and overcome to be successful.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Interpreters Associates, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
We render all sorts of linguistic services, for all sorts of platforms. We offer medical interpreters for Boston hospitals and also school the bilingual student who wishes to become an interpreter. Our company offers 4 modalities to study with us: onsite in Charlestown, onsite in Lowell, online and night classes in Lowell.
I am most proud, however, of the fact that we work with Latin American Pharmaceutical companies in partnership with ACINDES from Buenos Aires. These great companies send doctors from all over Latin America to participate in preceptorship programs here in Boston and other parts of the USA. We rub shoulders with the greatest medical minds of the world from Brigham and Women’s, Mass General, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the Mayo Clinic, to mention just a few.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Despite the intent of Google translate, a perfect translation can only be done by a real human. We see our industry safe for at least the next 20 years. In fact, we expect growth to continue as the world gets smaller and smaller.
