Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Bassett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Annie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I come from a family of artists and have been surrounded by creativity my entire life. My father is a professional painter and my mother is a published author. My siblings all work in art related fields; photography, film, galleries, following their passions and doing what they love. Stained glass was something I was always interested in, but never knew how to approach. When my husband and I moved away from our home, Cape Cod, we met a local woman who worked with glass. Her husband had recently passed and she decided to move across the country, so she was selling her glass studio. I visited her often to pick her brain about techniques and tools and ended up falling in love with glass work. I slowly began to build my own studio, creating and learning as I went, bending the traditional stained glass perception and bringing an old forgotten art form into modern day.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was in college studying painting, I felt like I got a lot of grief from fellow peers and professors for not having one main focus of study. I was painting, doing sculptures and ceramics, paper-making, metalwork, you name it. I felt it was such a great opportunity to learn and try a lot of different mediums. As I’ve grown older and have progressed more in my work, I’ve come to the realization that I won’t be satisfied just working with one type of medium, I want to continue to learn, try and explore.
Time is also a factor, sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day. I am a full time office manager at our local Department of Public Works, as well as a full time foster parent, so time is very valuable. I have an amazing husband who is not only my best friend, but my greatest supporter and he helps me carve out time to dedicate to the studio and my work.
A Bassett Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Bassett Studio I specialize in glass, ceramic and nature to create one of a kind, interesting, functional wares for the home. I’m constantly inspired by nature and her beauty, and incorporate that into my work. One of my favorite things I create is my glass botanical pieces. I take pressed flowers, ferns and the like and encapsulate them in clear glass, using the age-old Tiffany technique of copper foil.
Not many people know that each piece I create is crafted in my own home, polished in my little studio and packaged with love on my kitchen table (usually with the help of my cats!) I try to bring a lot of care and love into every step of my process because I feel that’s what is missing in this day and age of instant gratification and mass-produced products.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I feel that a home is such a sacred and special space, so when someone wants something that I’ve created to be placed in their home, possibly for generations, it’s such an incredible honor.
