Meet Angelo Gala of EDX CrossFit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo Gala.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angelo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first began to pursue fitness as a possible career at the age of 19. The personal training manager at a local Gold’s gym in my home town encouraged me to get an entry level certification as he saw my potential and noticed that I had a knack for body transformation. After high school I went to trade school and spent a few years working on cars before realizing I wanted to pursue fitness as a full-time career. I went back to college for exercise science and began collecting as much experience in different parts of the industry as I could.

In Boston, I worked as a personal trainer at the former FitCorp inside the Prudential Center for over 7 years. Eventually, I chose to take a coaching position at a CrossFit Box and my trajectory in the industry changed quickly.

I took the CrossFit coaching job as a jump off point as I wanted to eventually open my own box. I collected some experiences, created some great opportunities and in the process met my future wife, Liliana. She was a big motivator in pursuing my dream of opening our own gym.

We spent some time looking in Boston and the surrounding suburbs for a location to open a gym. During a vacation out to Colorado in the spring of 2016, we totally fell in love with the area and culture out here, adjusted our plans and decided to open shop out there. Our brick and mortar gym has been open since May 2017 and growing, while I continue to work with clients in the Boston area and nationwide through remote coaching.

Has it been a smooth road?
The journey to doing anything BIG is never smooth. We ran up against the many common obstacles in opening a business. We butted heads with egos, dealt with basic drama from small minds, but in the end left the security blanket of our long-built networks in Boston and made the move to open our first brick and mortar gym. We had to start from scratch and had to rebuild our network and reputation. It’s been a work in progress.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our gym’s name is EDX CrossFit which stands for EVERY DAY EXERCISE. Our tag line is “What’s Your X?”

Your “X” is essentially your “why.” Once you know why you are choosing fitness to facilitate a transformation physically, mentally and spiritually, it becomes inevitable that you become the best version of yourself outside the gym. Our X keeps us coming to the gym on days we may be tempted to skip it. It reminds us that this is more than just a workout. We become better humans when we break through physical and emotional barriers together.

At EDX CrossFit, we offer both small group classes and Individualized Program Design (for local and remote clients).

Our group classes emphasize balanced and progressive training, while also providing exposure to movements and training philosophies you won’t get anywhere else. It’s always different, and always fun, but each class builds upon the last. This helps to increase mobility, strength and endurance while preventing injury.

The Individual Program Design membership was created to address the specific needs and goals of athletes. We understand that starts working with us at a different place on the fitness continuum. Some people may need a fitness program that meets them where they are currently at – just to prepare them to join group classes- while other people have some big hairy goals that require a more personalized approach to helping them accomplish BIG things.

We specialize in fitness: real fitness with and unbiased approach to getting people where they need to go. We work with all athletic levels from total beginners to elite/professional athletes. With over 3 decades of experience behind us combined, we’re proud to have stood the test of time in a fitness industry known to be transient, which typically burns out a fitness professional within a few years.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is one of the top most active cities in the country. Bostonians also place a high value on their fitness and are willing to pay for a service if they see the value in it. Even though there are a lot of fitness professionals already working in the area, the market is far from saturated. Fitness professionals just entering the industry have the advantage of having access to a wide pool of potential clientele and can really figure out what their niche is.
