Meet Angela Sawyer of Midway Or The Highway in Jamaica Plain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Sawyer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Nothing brings a room together like putting the audience members on a stage. Its a world where anything can happen, and it will. That’s why I started going to comedy open mics, and now I run one. It’s so much fun, a lot of people just come to watch. I’ve been doing stand-up around Boston for about five years, and I’ve seen performers grow from wobbly-legged newbies into entertainment powerhouses. I’m awfully glad I get to grow along with them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenges are always there, sure. Awkward moments and tipsy folks come with the territory. But you don’t get to have fun unless you brave a little weird humanity, so I say bring it on. We’ve moved the mic around until we found a venue that really supports us, and we’ve found a real home at the Midway. We’re lucky to get nationally known performers and the best local secrets under one roof.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Midway Or The Highway story. Tell us more about the business.
Few open mics encourage such a wide range of performance while still bringing hours of quality in front of your face. We have a five-hour show every single week. And though it’s mostly comedians, we also see rappers, songwriters, avant-garde artsy things, and sometimes even a funny drunk. I’m proud of how many regulars stick around week after week. They’re what makes it worth staying up late to see just one more set.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We draw our performers from a literal bucket with names on little pieces of paper. It’s all luck.
