Meet Angela Roberts of Angela Roberts Photography in Western Massachusetts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Roberts.

Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for photography. I can remember saving my weekly allowance to purchase film and develop my images. I love the memories captured and the story they told. I grew up right by the Hallmark School of Photography. I always thought I would go there after high school, but life happens and I chose to go to school for nursing instead.

I purchased my first DSLR in 2012 just before our daughter was born. I didn’t want to forget the little details of her. Something was missing though. The vision in my head and the images produced didn’t match up. My mother-in-law sent me a YouTube video about shooting in manual that she thought I would like, I never put my camera back in auto again. It was a good year of practice, missing shots, struggling with lighting and messing up my settings before it started to click. I practiced every second I could, and my camera barely left my hand. I photographed any friend that would let me. I was finally feeling comfortable with my camera, and at that time we were about to have our second child. I was looking up newborn inspiration and found this whole new world of newborn photography. I was HOOKED! Come to find out, photographing newborns was much harder than it looked. About six months later I mentored with Starr Photography to learn posing and newborn safety. That hands on experience was the turning point. I booked model call after model call to practice. Then all of a sudden I was insured and starting a business. It has been quite the journey with so much support from my family, friends and clients. It hasn’t come easy though. Starting a business is a ton of work. I was filled with excitement and self-doubt. I was so motivated one day and the next day wondering how I’m going to balance it all. I feel I have found a good balance (most days) between being a wife, a mom of 4, a business owner, and a nurse. I work hard, have a lot of late nights, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I truly love what I do.

Becoming a mother was the most amazing experience I have ever had. I didn’t expect to have so much love for this little person I just met. I get butterflies thinking about the first second I met all of my children. It moved me so much that I don’t want anyone to forget the first days. Being a photographer is so much more than just snapping a picture. It capturing moments, emotion, bonds between family members, milestones moments. It’s creating art, freezing moments in time. I love, love, love capturing the journey from pregnancy to motherhood, brand new babies, becoming a family, growing your family, and everything in between.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many struggles along the way. It’s been hard finding the right balance between wife, mom of 4, being a nurse and running my own business. There is so much to learn. Some days don’t seem to end but we’re figuring it out. There definitely need to be more hours in a day! We’ve recently incorporated more of a routine into our days, which has been amazing. I also make sure that I take days off too. I can’t work every day. I feel like we’re in a great spot now.

Picking one is hard to do! I would say my favorite thing about childhood would be having my sister by my side through it all. She’s so kindhearted and grounds me. We had so many good times growing up. We’ve always had such a special relationship. She’s my best friend in the whole entire world.
