Meet Andrew Macaulay of Nomsly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Macaulay.

Andrew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child, I struggled with good eating habits and by the time I reached college I weighed over 300 pounds. I then decided that I needed to make dramatic changes in my life and committed to healthy eating. After a year of hard work, I lost 120 lbs. and gained all the healthy eating habits I wish I had from the start. Because of my experience, I wanted to help other children learn the value of nutrition to develop a lifetime of healthy eating habits

After talking with my co-founder Chris about his own difficulties providing healthy, fun, and convenient food for his kids, we decided to tackle the problem head on. Together, we founded Nomsly (www.nomsly.com), a Boston company that packs and delivers healthy lunches for kids. We help parents and their kids create healthy eating habits in a new convenient way! It’s been described as a healthy version of Lunchables meets a Blue Apron delivery model, and we’re working to simplify parents’ lives while helping them feed their kids nutritious, tasty food.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’d be lying if I told you that this whole process was smooth and painless, but I wouldn’t change anything. It’s been a combination of using both mine and my business partner’s strengths, while keeping in mind our weaknesses, so that we can push the business forward and watch it grow. Chris and I both come from an electrical engineering background, but neither of us have much consumer marketing experience and the kicker is that neither of us have worked in the food industry. A big challenge has been filling in the gaps of our weaknesses by using contractors where economically feasible as well as learning a new set of skills to ensure success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nomsly story. Tell us more about the business.
Nomsly prepares, packs and delivers healthy lunches for kids on a weekly basis right to their front doors, ordered online via subscription. We’re simplifying parents’ lives while helping them feed their kids nutritious, tasty food. The process is simple: parents login to our website, select their meals, and every week a box of prepacked lunches arrives at their door. All they have to do is pop one in their child’s lunch box each morning and they know they’re giving their kids the healthy, tasty food that will encourage a lifetime of positive habits.

Nomsly is unique in our focus on fresh, healthy meals full of fresh fruits and vegetables, free of artificial preservatives and we try to buy local and organic whenever possible. We have developed a strong brand that our customers tell us appeals to their kids and gets them excited for the meals. We’ve put a lot of effort into supporting parents, as any parent of a picky kids knows that getting your kids to eat more vegetables isn’t always easy. Our characters, our product experience, and our encouragement for both kids and their parents is a really unique concept that isn’t found elsewhere.

I’m most proud to be part of a company that’s making a big difference in kids’ lives and is tackling childhood obesity. It’s a huge problem with a pretty simple solution: getting in the habit of eating healthier, more nutritious foods. It’s great to know that because of what I’m doing, kids won’t ever have the struggle with the health problems I dealt with myself.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I guess the best way for me to categorize all my luck it would be that I am lucky for the people around me who have been supporting Chris and I through this adventure. If it were not for my friends and family that have been assisting us where they can (providing advice and encouragement, helping with our marketing, etc.) we wouldn’t be where we are today.
