Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy McAndrew.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It took me quite a while to get to the place I’m in today. With that said, it has been an exciting journey none the less. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art History. From there, I moved abroad to Rome, Italy to give personal tours and historical lectures of the Vatican and the city of Rome. Dream job right? YES! Administering tours of the Sistine Chapel on a daily basis while looking up at Michelangelo’s iconic, “Creation” fresco never got old. Yet, after a few busy tour seasons with hardly any air conditioning, I began to miss my family and friends terribly so I decided to move back home.
However, even with all of my “worldly” experience, it was quite difficult to find a job in my field. This left me feeling somewhat lost and unsure of my path. However, living abroad helped me become more independent, fearless and ambitious. Although my European excursion had ended, I still yearned for a fulfilling and challenging career. So after some major soul searching, I decided to put more emphasis on my personal wellness.
I figured exercise was the most appropriate place to start. I hired a personal trainer and began to see a change in my body. I liked it. Not only did I like my physical improvement, I truly loved how it made me feel from within. I began to feel passionate about something other than art and traveling. This soon led me to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry.
From there, I channeled my teaching background to help educate individuals on how living a healthier lifestyle could yield positive results from the Inside Out!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe all true success stories start with some type of obstacle or struggle. Remember, the sweet is never as sweet without the sour! Personal training is a multifaceted job. Part motivator, coach, educator and therapist!
These days, personal trainers are a dime a dozen. Fitness has morphed into a popular “sport” and a social media phenomenon. However, over the years I have acquired valuable skills that have helped me professionally to build a successful business and sustainable clientele.
There is a certain level of trust and respect that needs to be established with each client so they feel safe enough to participate in a workout program. I learned to listen and observe. I understand that good relationships and real results take time. More importantly, a person can’t truly change or transform without challenging themselves physically AND mentally. My job is to help people believe they are all capable of becoming better versions of themselves.
Please tell us about Inside Out Fitness LLC.
After my return living abroad, I went back to school to receive an Exercise Science degree. In 2009, I became a certified personal trainer with American Council on Exercise (ACE). I always had dreams of working for myself and having my own business. In 2010, Inside Out Fitness was born!
In 2011, I was hired as the In-House Personal Fitness Trainer exclusively for a prominent golf course in Quincy. Since working with many avid golfers, I became certified with Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) to offer physical screens and assessments to the club members. The TPI Fitness Certification allowed me the knowledge and tools to design effective conditioning programs for players of all ages and abilities ultimately maximizing their performance on the course. As of now, we are the only golf course in the area that offers this specialized service.
I also specialize in post-rehab strength and conditioning training. I have partnered with a local physical therapist to help create the most appropriate treatment plans for various clients and golfers who present greater physical limitations.
In this last year, I started offering online/at-home fitness challenges. These have been extremely successful and popular as some individuals may not have the financial means or interest in one on one personal training.
Most importantly, I do not believe in cookie cutter fitness plans. I prefer to train each person according to their body type and desired physical goal. I pride myself on never repeating the same workout so my clients can always expect to have their muscles confused and challenged in each training session!
With that said, I have seen incredible physical gains when I constantly change up my own workouts, which can avoid fitness plateaus and boredom. My personal workout routine consists of boxing, barre, power yoga, Pilates, pound and my favorite – high intensity interval and Tabata training for strength/conditioning and running.
I apply the same rule of thought for my clients. I use a variety of similar training methods and offer various comprehensive nutritional plans for clean and healthier eating habits. Exercise and diet are absolutely critical for achieving as well as maintaining your desired number on the scale!
I truly believe with the proper balance of physical training, clean eating along with positive mental discipline you can achieve your ultimate self.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I have to be honest. It’s been a very long road to get where I am today. However, I am a true believer in fate and karma. If I didn’t travel the off beaten track, I wouldn’t have the amazing life I live now. I attribute my incredible clients, friends, husband, son and family to my journey. And without them, I would have nothing.
