Meet Amanda Capone of Lucky Dog’s Daycare & Pet Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Capone.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Originally from Sarasota, Florida, I have worked with animals for 12 + years. I began working at the Petco Training Camp, where I learned how to handle and take care of small animals (rodents, birds, and exotic pets). I also attended classes at Pet Smart’s Animal Career Center. I studied through Penn State and its sister school Penn Foster Career College for Grooming, Animal Psychology, Pet Behavior, Animal Science/Anatomy, Animal Care, and Pet Training. I worked for local grooming shops in Peabody, Massachusetts as an assistant groomer. I also worked at a local dog daycare facility as a Daycare Attendant and Groomer. I am animal CPR certified and a Short Term Animal Paramedic. I currently a Mommy to an Australian Dingo “Colby”, a Schnauzer “Tyson”, and my non-furry children, Thomas and Sara. My goal was to open a dog daycare where every dog was like our own, where we would just be above and beyond all the issues that I had working at previous facilities & I am happy and so ecstatic that we have done exactly that! We have established an awesome customer base since our opening and I am proud to say that many of our regular customers are now some of my very good friends. – Amanda

As avid “dog lovers” our family has cared, nurtured, and pampered our dogs for over 25 years. With 3 dogs of our own and 6 dogs through our extended family, our home was always a dog’s home away from home. That is why we decided to start Lucky Dogs Daycare. At our daycare, your dog will receive the care, attention and nurturing your dog deserves. It’s the look on their face when you are playing, talking and pampering them that make us smile. We can’t take the place of mom and dad, but we can be the best surrogate for your dog. Our dogs are part of our family and we will treat your dog as one of our own. -Bob and Joanne Capone

Has it been a smooth road?
We have had our curbs like all companies in the first few years. But with a fantastic team behind us we now have our feet in the ground. A lot of our customers are through word of mouth. We have won a lot of awards recently and we were able to get where we are now. A lot has to do with my age I am very young in the industry and a lot of old timer- dog daycare’s see it as a threat. I have been put down because of my last name (haha) everyone assumes I work with food or some of the notorious restaurants with Capone in it. It’s just a coincidence. But for the most part everything has been amazing, again my team has worked very hard to keep our customers very very happy!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lucky Dogs Daycare is a family owned, independent business providing your dog with personalized care and quality service. We provide supervised play areas, and interaction in a safe indoor play environment.

Letting dogs have free-time to interact with other dogs and humans of all ages is one of the most important things responsible dog owners can do.

Dog daycare helps dogs develop into a calm, confident dog unlikely to bark, bite or become fearful or aggressive. Allowing dogs the opportunity to socialize with other dogs is probably one of the most important gifts dog owners can give themselves and their dog.

We have amenities such as, Pet party rentals, 24 hr. web cams, Boarding, Grooming, Pet food and retail AND massage therapy I mean there is so much it’s hard to cover our boarding has so much to do with our success we are open on a lot of holidays

Our facility offers 6,000 square feet of play area for any size and any breed of dog. We have numerous rooms where we separate dogs by temperament, play style, age, breed and size. This ensures ultimate safety for your pet’s play time. Each room is monitored by our employees at all times.

We do not discriminate against any breed of dog. Each dog is individually evaluated on their first day – which is a trial day – to ensure that the animal has the personality and temperament to fit into our environment and our specific daycare groups. Please acknowledge that just because your dog has been in a daycare before, does not mean it will fit into ours. Our program requires that each dog can get along with a large group of alike dogs. We do not have any kind of mandatory “breaks” during our day – so that your dog gets the most out of his/her daycare or boarding experience.

Our employees are drug/background tested, CPR/Animal first aid certified and are trained to evaluate play based on a dog’s body language and behavior. We believe prevention is key to keeping dog’s safe, so we use our knowledge of dog behavior to prevent fights before they even have a chance to break out. This is essential for keeping dogs healthy and happy.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
In Boston of course with inner city living and apartment / condo style homes there is not a lot of yard space so it’s important to get your dog exercise. I mean dog walking just won’t cut it, a dog requires all day energy release. So Boston would be an amazing place to have dog daycares on every block, only suggestion is owners or the people running it have the right education and licensing. People tend to forget that it’s not just loving dogs, it’s about experience education and licenses. You don’t want just anyone opening up a place. Death and injury is a factor even in the utmost well maintained facility. They are animals, not pets once they are in a pack environment. That would be my only suggestion to put yourself through the best training you can take before opening a place or get you someone who is certified to run it!
