Today we’d like to introduce you to Amalia Flaisher.
Amalia’s passion to paint on glass grew from her diverse background and studies in graphic design, metalsmithing, photography and silk painting. Looking for another creative medium to express her love of the colors and shapes she found within nature she explored the art of painting on glass.
Amalia’s family is a combination of many different cultures that have influenced her art, especially her grandmother Marie Glaser. Marie was born and raised in Czechoslovakia and moved to Romania with her husband. Marie’s stories about growing up in Chesky-Teshen became another inspiration for Amalia and are reflected in her art. She models her style after the work of great impressionist artists like Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and others.
With nature and our environment in mind, Amalia has designed a line of eco-friendly glass art that is multi-functional and fun. “By combining my graphic design background and love of design with my passion for working with glass, I am able to create unique pieces of glass art.”
For years she’d been making art in her home studio, but ultimately decided to turn her hobby into a business. What started in a garage quickly grew from a home basement to a fully operational 850 sq. foot studio in Downtown Nashua, NH. Sand and Water Creations has now grown to proudly employ a team of local artists.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Growing pains – growing is not an easy process. What is most challenging as an artist is creating a balance between maintaining a business and existing within the boundaries ‘business world’, while having the freedom to explore your artistic expression.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sand and Water Creations in Glass story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a growing family owned business working from our studio in Nashua, New Hampshire creating handmade and functional glass art. Our passion is to find new and creative ways to utilize recycled and repurposed glass. We pride ourselves on being made in the USA while creating beautiful eco-friendly products for everyone to use and enjoy. Our spirituality has inspired us to create a line of unique Judaica art such as Menorahs made from recycled glass, painted landscapes of landmarks in Jerusalem and sentimental Home Blessings.
We have the unique opportunity to get to know our customers on a personal level and create products for them that reflect their personal style. For example, we have gone on to create personalized items for our customers such as adorning our recycled wind chimes with portraits of their pets and even family members!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
While I don’t believe in luck, I do believe that everything happens for a reason. Whether the situation seems to be good or bad at the time, it always turns out to be good in the end. Your perception on life is what will materialize in your life.
Earlier this year, I suffered a major heart attack that put a stop to everything in my life – at least that’s what I thought. In reality, this was not the case. It was an opportunity to stop, look, observe and learning to slow down and appreciate every moment large and small. Family, friends and my team at the studio carried on the things I could no longer do at the time and gave me the opportunity to give myself the time I needed to heal.
