Today we’d like to introduce you to Allana Taranto.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Allana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a people person. I love meeting new people, learning about them and working with them to create beautiful portraits. I’ve been making portraits since I picked up a camera as a preteen, but it took me a while to settle on it as a career.
Before embarking as a full-time photographer, I taught high school photography and the visual arts as a teaching artist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. I treasure those experiences and find that my background in arts education and studio arts informed much of my practice as a portrait photographer. When I returned to the east coast, I joined a creative cooperative co-working space. The energy and passion in that space fueled a deeper understanding of different creative disciplines and community building.
While I still photograph weddings and family portraits, my women’s portraiture business, Modern Glamour, has grown over the years. I photograph women who are celebrating an internal change in their lives; it might be a milestone birthday, a recovery from a major health issue or a personal breakthrough. I truly believe that there are many ways to feel beautiful. There is no one size fits all prescription. It starts with being strong, confident, and loving yourself.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s much easier to show what I do than to describe it; so I’m thankful that I can share a portfolio right on my phone. Many people already have an image in their mind related to the words boudoir or glamour and I use this as a chance to educate and differentiate what I do as a women’s portrait photographer.
A portrait is more than a likeness. A portrait can communicate your story. It is a visual expression of who you are and how you share yourself in the world and how you live in your life. My own work continues to evolve as I work on learning about and accepting myself. And that’s a lifelong journey!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Modern Glamour – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Modern Glamour portraits are a celebration of you and for you. We approach each and every session with acceptance and radically inclusivity; acknowledging the individual. I really do see Modern Glamour portrait sessions as a collaboration. We begin by discovering and refining our vision and then work together to plan a custom portrait experience.
My job is to make authentically beautiful photographs and I create images that honor and celebrate my muses as the vibrant individuals they are.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Returning to Boston, after some years on the West Coast, I felt a sense of pride in being Bostonian and a deep feeling of belonging to this place. On the radio, I catch the voice of a childhood friend on NPR. At the polls, I see the name of a high school classmate on the city ballot. It’s a small and unique city, with surprising points of connection across different spheres. I believe working towards a dynamic and progressive Boston; which includes a strong artist and small business community.
