Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Meyers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I believe I was born with the passion of caring for children. As a young girl growing up I’ve always loved babysitting for my mother’s friends but, never did I imagine that I would be the owner of my own daycare.
My senior year in High School, I did my internship at a daycare called “Village Preschool”, which became my first job after I graduated. Within the next 2 years I worked at a few other daycare centers before a good friend of mine encouraged me to open my own. It was March of 2006 when I opened my family daycare.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If there weren’t any obstacles and challenges on this road it wouldn’t have taken me 11 years to get where I am now. Having your business in your home has its ups and downs. There was a point of time in my life back in 2008/2009 my siblings and I were getting evicted and I did not know how to tell my parents where I was gonna go. I just had my daughter and all I could think of was, I left my job to start a business that it was going to fail. It was a difficult time for me. After praying and praying, by God’s grace we were able to buy the house. 10 years later, even though I still encountered trials and tribulations I continued to thank God because it made me stronger. I’m a strong believer of the law of attraction and I only intend on attracting the best that life has to offer myself and my business.
Please tell us about Tiny Hands Family Daycare.
Tiny Hands Family Daycare is a safe, loving, fun learning environment for people to bring their children. Being in a home daycare some parents look at you as just a babysitter but I offer you the learning environment that you would probably see in a daycare center. My mission is that each child can develop a sense of independence and enjoy learning through play. We engage in a lot of different activities and events, some in and out that may not be daycare related. A lot of these events are opportunities for the families to get to know each other and share their experiences here at Tiny Hands Family Daycare. Most home daycares and centers don’t offer that to the parents.
For a while, I did not know what I was proud of but after giving it some thought, I’m proud that my business is still standing 11 years later. I’m proud that after 11 years of running my daycare out of my home that I’m finally moving it into its own building.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood would be traveling and going on road trips with my Aunt. My parents didn’t travel a lot and the fact that I was able to have that experience made me want to travel more as an adult and also want the same for my daughter.
