Meet Alicia Bertoni-Hickey of Inner Strength Physical Therapy in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Bertoni-Hickey.

Alicia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been a physical therapist for 10+ years across many different settings but had gotten restless in my most recent job. I felt like I was spending most of my time completing paperwork for insurance companies versus actually treating patients, which is what led me to start my own practice in beginning of 2018. My own personal story has led me to where I’m at now. I had significant pelvic pain during my third pregnancy making it difficult for me to work and take care of my other children. I had known from my training that women’s health physical therapists specialize in treating pregnancy-related conditions, along with other things, so I decided to seek one out. I had immediate relief and was able to continue working. However, this PT was only women’s health PT in my area and I knew there is such a need for this service, I decided to take the appropriate coursework so that I could help other women who were in my shoes and Inner Strength Physical Therapy was born.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha, I wish! It has been a lot more work than anticipated. What is most difficult for me is the marketing aspect, and letting people know that my service exists. I knew nothing about marketing before I started, and still spend most of my free time learning new strategies. I also feel that there is always something that can be done. During any free time, after the kids go to bed or in the early morning, I am spending time on my business. There is never any time off.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Inner Strength Physical Therapy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is called Inner Strength Physical Therapy. It is a concierge women’s health practice that treats women in their homes or in office in Norwell. I am defining concierge as providing a higher level of care and service that no other physical therapy clinic provides. I do not double-book patients, or treat more than one patient at a time. I do not use an aide or PT assistant to provide any of the treatments. I provide an hour of one-on-one treatment time, versus the typical 30 minute sessions. I am always available by phone or email for any questions or concerns at any time of day, on the evening or weekends. I coordinate care with other providers as necessary or appropriate. This is how healthcare and wellness services should be. I strive to teach women the skills to heal themselves, rather than them receiving passive treatment.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am a Norwellian transplant but have fallen in love with this small town. It is a town with such a strong sense of community pride and caring for one’s neighbors. I love the rural feel, while also having the convenience of the supermarket down the street. I like that I can say I’m running to the farm, and my family has to ask which one, the dairy farm or vegetable farm. Plus, we are 20 minutes from the ocean, which is a must for me. We are big beach bums in the summer.
