Meet Alexis Pena of LA Bella Aesthetics in Worcester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Pena.

Alexis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I went into nursing right out of high school and received my Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from Worcester State University in 2011. I knew I wanted to work in a hospital but at that time you needed to have “experience” My first job was at a skilled nursing facility. Shortly after, I took a position in a long term acute care facility. I eventually worked my way onto a Cardiac Telemetry Unit at St. Vincent Hospital. My goal was to make it into the Emergency Department; where I have worked for the past four years. The high-stress environment and 12-hour shifts, I found myself feeling burnt out quickly, after becoming a first-time mom. I knew I needed a positive change, personally & professionally, but wasn’t sure exactly what that was. I have always had an interest in skin care; especially since I struggled with adult acne, wrinkles & sun damage. I’ve tried numerous topical products, but of the late, they didn’t seem to make a difference. After connecting with a friend who also runs her own medical spa, I decided to sign up for private aesthetic/injectable training courses and one-on-one training. After having numerous amounts of practice on my family/friends, I finally decided to make it official and start my own practice.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Registered Nurses are generally well-respected professionals but I felt a lot of indifference with others on my decision to transition into medical aesthetics. Improving client appearance and boosting self-esteem can be so profound & rewarding. I have also learned that networking within this industry is vital to progress. I’m introverted by nature so this is somewhat challenging for me, but the more often I do it, the more comfortable it becomes.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the LA Bella Aesthetics story. Tell us more about it.
My business is called LA Bella Aesthetics named after my two daughters Lucia Ana (LA) and Isabella (Bella). I started this company on my own, and the growth has been continuously steady – for that I am the proudest! I practice minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as Neurotoxin (Botox/Xeomin) Injections, Dermal and Lip fillers, Medical Grade Chemical Peels, Collagen Induction Therapy, PRP therapy for Skin and Hair rejuvenation and Kybella (chin fat removal) I will be adding more services early October 2018. Every client is unique & it’s important to set realistic expectations. I like that I can explore my artistic side but also use my clinical judgment to achieve patient-specific goals. I always follow up with my clients in the days following a procedure and encourage them to text or call me any time with any questions or concerns they have. I really want to make sure I run a trustworthy and reputable business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have a BOSS of a grandmother and am so lucky she played such a pivotal role in my life. I grew up working for her and I know first hand the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful small business. She still works at the age of 75! I definitely got my work ethic from her and also my mother. Being the oldest in my family, I learned how to be very independent and have been told I have a “go-getter” personality. Opening up a business has been a long time goal of mine, needless to say, I went for it. I have always believed in failing forward. I continue to learn life lessons through trial and error. To add, I’m lucky to have my education! After all, it’s my nursing degree that makes this even possible.
