Meet Alexis Frobin of Alexis Frobin Acupuncture in Dorchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Frobin.

Alexis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first got into acupuncture after being ill and needing some kind of relief as I waited months for my eventual diagnosis of Lyme Disease. I was amazed at how much acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine could help my pain and manage the other symptoms of the disease when nothing else seemed to be working. At the time I was a GED teacher at Project Hope in Roxbury, MA, teaching reading, writing, and math to adult women striving towards their high school equivalency. I loved my job, but the more I experienced the effects of acupuncture, the more I wanted to share the benefits of holistic medicine with my students and others in my life. In 2012, I took a huge leap and enrolled in the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Going to graduate school, especially one with a 4-year commitment, as an adult and leaving behind the career I’d had since graduating college definitely had its fair share of challenges. Between assisting with local acupuncturists, attending classes, studying for tests, memorizing hundreds of herbs, and working in both the library and bookstore at NESA, I often felt like I lived in the school. However, this total immersion in the world of Chinese Medicine was inspiring, and I realized that I had chosen a career where I will never stop learning – a perfect career for a former teacher!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alexis Frobin Acupuncture – what should we know?
I was lucky enough to start working at KenkoDo Clinic in Somerville’s Ball Square after becoming licensed and have been steadily building my practice there for the past 1.5 years. My dream to practice in the Dorchester/Roxbury area finally came true in April 2018 when I stumbled upon the perfect office space in Fields Corner. Now I’m working in both locations and learning how to build my own business.

I consider myself a generalist and see many patients for pain conditions, digestive issues, and GYN concerns. However, I particularly enjoy working with the mental-emotional aspects of health and treating people for stress, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. I practice Chinese-style acupuncture and have training in both Orthopedic Acupuncture and Dr. Tan’s Balance Method. The Balance Method is a style of acupuncture where, for example, you can treat back pain by needling points on the hands and feet. Depending on the patient’s specific condition, treatments are customized to best fit the person’s needs. I also enjoy using adjunctive techniques like cupping, gua sha (scraping therapy), and moxibustion (warming herbal therapy).

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I couldn’t have made it through acupuncture school without my family and friends. I’m also very grateful to the new friends that I made in school, specifically my co-workers at the NESA Library whose wisdom guided me through the program.

Finding my new office space in Dorchester was a dream, but getting the room ready for patients was a lot more work than expected. Fortunately, I received a great deal of help in setting up my new office, which involved pulling down five layers of old wallpaper and replastering the wall. I couldn’t have gotten the space ready for business without the support of a few handy friends with extensive knowledge of home repair.

My own acupuncturist Deborah Lemont has been treating me for almost 10 years and her support has been invaluable to me.

Alexis’ story was so inspiring. Acupuncture is so often overlooked or disregarded, but it’s definitely something that must be further explored. Dorchester needs your drive and talent!
