Meet Alexandra Gilliard of Otherworldly Art in Brighton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Gilliard.

Alexandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been an avid reader, and I found a lot of inspiration in a book called “Abarat” by Clive Barker — a story about a girl who travels to another world — and all of the author’s own paintings displayed throughout each of the three books. This is what inspired me to start painting in high school, though I had previously been drawing in pencil throughout middle school. Over time, I’ve made my style my own, but continue to gain inspiration from the stories I read. My style has become centered around space – and night-themed imagery, a trait that I typically carry throughout most of my paintings. Today, I’m working toward building my stock of canvas paintings, though I’m slowly branching out into other mediums as well, as I’ve just recently created enamel pins based off of one of my paintings for the very first time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always painted for fun, though without any formal training, there can be some frustrations simply in learning new techniques and methods. Painting has always been a way for me to relax and unwind after a busy week, so there have been few negatives for me throughout the process of growing as an artist.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in canvas paintings using acrylics and markers. I love using bright, bold colors and strong outlines for emphasis, and most of my artwork will feature a character with strong features placed in the foreground. I come up with new worlds for my characters to exist in for each painting, and try to capture an ethereal feeling within each work. I’ve also created enamel pins and stickers from a few of my paintings to explore new mediums beyond canvas.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think it’s essential to constantly learn new techniques and try to challenge myself to create more complex forms and color combinations.
