Meet Alec Hutson of Warbird Creative in Somerville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Hutson.

Alec, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been creatively inclined; if I could have access to materials I could figure out a way to use them in a compelling way. That’s why, as a disillusioned graduate with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and no interest in the field, I began dip my feet into the world of freelancing.

Warbird Creative started off five years ago as a way to keep my mind busy in between odd jobs and musical endeavors. It has since blossomed into a full design service, and though I primarily still operate everything solo, I have built up a network of contractors and collaborators to fill in the gaps in my skill set. Today, we offer services ranging from print/branding design to video production and animation.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road of a freelancer and entrepreneur has been far from smooth. I jumped into freelancing before ever working for a company or firm, which meant I had to learn everything from scratch – from interacting with customers to running a business to the design work itself. YouTube and Google were my closest allies, until I was able to connect with and learn from peers and mentors in the field.

Financial stability has always been a bit of a sore spot, especially after a rogue PR company ran off with several thousand dollars of hard-earned money sometime last year. That loss, and the ensuing legal battle that continues to this day, have been some of the most taxing experiences I’ve encountered.

Please tell us about Warbird Creative.
Warbird Creative is a media marketing company that specializes in logo design, branding, and video, though our projects range from web design to animation to mural illustration and everything in between. We do a lot of work with local businesses, musicians and entrepreneurs and are known for our versatility and ability to take on projects of all shapes and sizes. The majority of our customers find us through word of mouth referrals, which in itself speaks to the quality of the work.

In addition to traditional customer-based design work, we are also involved with multiple entrepreneurial ventures, including a twist on guitar picks called Dick Picks (www.thedickpicks.com).

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
