Meet Alan Phung of Cineture Studio in Lowell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Phung.

So, before you jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.

I’ve first picked up a camera when I was around 12 years old, playing with my father’s old Nikon SLR film camera and VHS Camcorder. Where I started learning more about photography and eventually ventured into making silly home videos. During this time, I was also getting into break dancing as another form to express my art.

In 2010, my passion for filmmaking and photography grew tremendously. Even though I started in Photography, I felt my passion was more towards Filmmaking.

I started making posts on craigslist in offering my services for Photography. I started off with working with models in time for prints in exchange to build up my portfolio.  From there, doing photo shoots for models, brand clothing, short films, and corporate videos. As my portfolio has been growing, it eventually turned out into paid gigs.

Around that time, I was attending a friends wedding. And of course, the wedding videographer caught my attention. From there, an idea rippled through my mind. I have done almost every type of Photo/Video type of gig except for wedding events. I knew that Wedding Videos would challenge me as a filmmaker because they were so different from the type of videos I was previously creating.

I never thought about going into the Wedding business, until I attended a friends wedding. The thought of shooting a wedding seem intimidating at the time, but after a few under your belt, you’re good to go.  So I decided to go for it. First, I offered only photography and eventually transitioned into filmmaking. Now, I offer both services to my potential clients.

As for a studio name, I wanted to come up with a name with a mixture of Photo and Video, and used the words Cinema and Pictures, creating Cineture. I decided to start Cineture Studio as a business in late 2012 offering Wedding Films and/or Wedding Photos.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some the struggles along the way?

I would be lying if I said it was a smooth road. Like any other business, there’s always a risk. The way I see it, it’s a high risk with big rewards. Passion can be a very powerful thing. Having the drive to go with it will take you far. There was some struggle transitioning from photographer to full-time filmmaker. Because of these struggles I was able to overcome and become a better filmmaker/artist, entrepreneur.

I do try to educate, seek mentorship from other successful shooters, and attend photography & wedding expos.

What I find that helps me progress over the years is planning. A friend once told me, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” If you love what you do and are having fun doing it, there shouldn’t be too many struggles along the way.
