Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Kopinja.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for photography is definitely in my blood. Growing up in Poland, I spent a large amount of time in my father’s dark room. He was a crime scene photographer and an evidence specialist, and seeing him in action sparked my interest in photography. I would spend endless hours in his lab, developing my school field trip photos. I vividly remember using his microscope to examine various insects I had discovered on my way home, while he sat beside me trying to match fingerprints from a crime scene on another microscope. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a camera strapped over my shoulder. Even now, thirty years later, I still have friends from Poland sending me pictures I took back in my school days.
Today, I spend my days as a newborn, maternity, and portrait photographer at my company, The Precious Foto. I create timelines of photographs for families beginning with maternity sessions, leading up to baby photos a few weeks later. It has taken me over ten years to hone my techniques for photographing newborns in unique, memorable poses in a way that ensures their absolute safety. I take pride in constructing sessions that feel completely relaxed and natural; I do this by creating a studio-like environment in the comfort of my clients’ homes. In this way, I am able to put everyone at ease and inspire photos that truly highlight the individual personalities of each person within the household. My mission is to create portraits of families that are timeless; therefore, I don’t follow many trends. My images are pure, clean, and simple; in my eyes, the subject of the photograph is the most important component and should be the focus. I don’t believe in digital packages alone, although I do offer digital images. All of my collections come with mounted prints in different sizes.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are plenty of challenges on the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur, but I love being pushed forward out of my comfort zone. Since I never know what type of space I will be working in, I need to be adaptable and creative, able to conform to any unexpected scenario. As much as I love the photography itself, I had no idea when I started that only 25% of my time would be spent taking photos. The rest of my time is spent on the business piece: education, marketing, editing, and bookkeeping. There is so much more involved than just clicking the shutter, and I am constantly learning and growing. As a business owner, I also feel lucky to have the flexibility to build a work schedule that allows me to spend as much time as possible with my two beautiful daughters. Family always comes first, and this is the message that shines through every photo I take.
Please tell us about The Precious Foto.
In today’s world, we are so used to taking quick pictures with our phones. We live in a society where it is easy to capture the silly, sad, and happy moments of our day to day lives. But let’s be honest: don’t you have a completely different level of appreciation for your grandparents’ professional photos of their wedding? Portrait photography conveys an experience that you simply can’t get with a snap of your iPhone. The ability to capture fleeting, precious moments in time and make them come alive is a gift, and it is a gift that I am so grateful to share with my clients. When I look back at portraits of my family…seeing photos of my pregnant mother still waiting to see my face, then the first moments of holding me…these images are priceless. This was my inspiration for starting my education to become a maternity, newborn, and portrait photographer. Every day, I strive to stop time for the families I work with, giving them a way to experience these incredible moments both now and in thirty years from now.
