Meet Adie Sprague and Dave LaLiberte of Treat Cupcake Bar in Needham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adie Sprague and Dave LaLiberte.

Owner David LaLiberte came from a career in finance (trading) and retired when his kids were young. He wanted to make sure they knew he had work ethic so decided to fulfill his dream of owning and operating a small business. He wanted to open something in his community of Needham, something that would benefit the families in town. The concept of the cupcake shop seemed like a great fit. Plans started in 2009 to create a unique make-your-own cupcake cafe. He brought on Adie, just out of college, to refine the business plan, develop the recipes, and run the day to day operations once the store opened in summer of 2010. It has been 7 years and the store continually develops with the changing trends. They have added new products, but at the end of the day everything comes back to the core cupcakes. They have grown their catering- large scale orders, custom designs and cakes, cake pops, and cookies. They have also expanded their “make-your-own” concept to include ice cream in their Needham shop as well as host birthday parties and team building events.

Has it been a smooth road?
Small business is always a struggle. We have always had to decide when to expand and when to stay simple. With each added item we have to make sure it fits perfectly into our concept to not split resources.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Out most unique elements are:

1) Our Make-Your-Own cupcake concept, making the experience interactive if you choose, and

2) Our ability to cater to food allergies. We have grown to have a very positive reputation for our Gluten-Free menu. We are able to safely accommodate those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. We are one of the only shops around that can do custom GF cakes, cupcakes, pops, etc. We also cater to egg, dairy, soy, and nut intolerance. Our allergy-friendly customers are super loyal and we are very proud of our specialty products and ability to serve them confidently.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
