Meet Aaron Usher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Usher.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m basically a commercial photographer specializing in architectural photographs of buildings for architects, interior designers, general contractors, real estate developers, and similar industries. I work throughout New England and regionally along the East Coast with an occasional assignment in Florida. This work has been published in over 330 magazines and hundreds more web sites over my 38-year career. Concurrently with this work, I make images for display in galleries. I intend my personal work to have some humor, cleverness or some sort of unusual juxtaposition. You may see that with my attached images.

I had won a camera as a 10-year-old delivery boy from the Providence Bulletin evening paper. While it
quickly broke, I committed to being a photographer at that point. Went to RIT in NY and had no idea at the time that someone could make ‘art photos’. After a JR year abroad in Salzburg, Austria where my school was in the renovated stables of the palace the Sound of Music was filmed. That’s what clinched everything for me! Now I was starting to make images that tried to speak to the viewer.

Please tell us about your art.
5 of the images I attached are from a series I call ‘Ice Abstractions’ Based on the series of ‘Equivalents’ by
photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, they can be viewed as being microscopic or stratospheric. My intention is to allow the viewer’s eyes to roam throughout the image and read into the image various shapes that may resemble something from the outer world. Much like one could see an elephant in a cloud. Another series shown is combining 2 or more images from different times/years/places, that could have a connection happening.

The triptych shown is a representation of my goal setting. The left photo has no real entry point and is a big goal that is seemingly impenetrable. The middle image still has a bullseye but now has a lot of entry points to reach that goal. (Sort of the ‘how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time) The final image looks at the goal as a progression from one step after another, as I tend to break down goals into smaller actions that lead to a desired result. The last shot I call ‘Self-Portrait on NJ Boardwalk and can be used for my portrait if you like.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I try to make my work ask more questions than it can answer. To me, any artwork needs to be more than a pretty picture for me to be successful.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
