Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Trant.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been interested in music. As a little kid, I would gravitate towards certain songs on the radio like most kids do with toys. I would sit with the radio for hours waiting for that ‘one’ song to come on and make my day. When I was a little older, my family purchased cable TV. My listening to the radio turned into watching MTV – Once I saw those big rock drum sets, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I started taking lessons when I was 10 and played in the school bands. The high school I went to had a very good jazz band, this opened my ears to improvisation which also led my musical interest into the whole world of percussion. In college, I continued serious study of jazz, improvised music, as well as orchestral percussion and music of the avant-garde. All of these interests allowed me to perform in most styles of music as well as compose in these styles.
Has it been a smooth road?
Music is always a challenge – whether you’re improving on your instrument, working on an audition, or just trying to get a gig. For me, having my hand in many pots (performing, composing, and teaching) keeps my creativity alive as well as making ends meet. The biggest challenge for me is scheduling in such away so that each aspect can receive its full attention.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aaron Trant story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m primarily known around town as a ‘new music’ percussionist. I perform solo and chamber music by living and often local composers. I also have really studied and practiced jazz and other improvisatory based music’s. My studies at New England Conservatory centered on orchestral repertoire. I’ve been able to make a career because I can play most anything that comes my way. I don’t have to turn down performance opportunities because ‘I don’t know that style or way of playing’.
