Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Spagnolo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For some strange reason, I love being with a pair that is just head over heels in love. In those cases, love happens organically—I don’t necessarily have to prompt a kiss or a hug.
So basically, I’m a wedding photographer and I shoot lovers for a living. I’m a mad little cupid who traded in their primitive bow and arrows for a high-end digital camera.
I want to make photography one of the best parts of your wedding, a fun experience, one where we get to create some art, be it fine art or candid. We’ll catalog some love, a moment in your relationship, and a good natural kiss or two along the way. In other words, my work entails anything but awkward poses with a string of guests and relatives. I’m more the creative type. I’m the photographer where couples look forward to sneaking away for a few minutes to create some imagery, something they’ll look at for years to come as they embark on their future together.
My wife and I lived in Boston for quite some time, zipping around here and there on bikes with my camera on my back. Nowadays we’ve made homestead up in North Reading (not too far, about 15 minutes from the Science Museum). It’s a cozy little house on a little hill by a pond. We usually have a fire going, and you’re more than welcome to come visit, just do me one favor and call first! Ideally, we look at my work, chat a bit and work up a game plan for your wedding day. I give each couple 100 percent of my attention, each client is one more than I ever imagined getting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been mostly a smooth road. I initially got into wedding photography due to requests. I was approached to cover my first wedding as a second shooter; it turned out to be a wedding designed by Martha Stewart for a pair of TV personalities! That experience gave me two things: it taught me to enjoy covering weddings; it also gave me the first few portfolio pieces that allowed a few friends to approach me for coverage of their own weddings. Soon after, I began receiving organic clients through search engines and the like. I believe within the first two years of offering wedding photography I had won my first industry award.
It is a challenging career, there is no end of competition in the market place, not to mention, everyone has a camera in their pocket nowadays. I’d argue photography is one of the hardest career paths to really get going. That’s also probably one of my favorite things about it: the constant challenge, the constant need to grow and evolve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aaron Spagnolo Wedding Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
As a photographer I am the business, I’m providing my experience, knowledge, imagination, and quick trigger finger. I personally specialize in Candid and Portraiture, from the quick fleeting moments that I capture due to diligence and quick reflexes, to more imaginative and advanced techniques used to create a unique work of art. Generally these seem to be enough to set myself apart. I can also be in just about any type of environment and create something cool and long lasting.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Wedding photography is of course people focused. Being in a large metropolitan area can offer you both the advantage of a large client base, but also a disadvantage as you have many competitors. In Boston, it helps that there is constantly an influx of students, many of whom may stay for the long run. Most will hopefully be on the hunt for a wedding photographer sooner or later.
Our city is awesome, and provides endless scenes and locations to work with. The biggest challenge in my opinion is the winters, when it’s a slow season for weddings, but that just means a busier spring, summer, and fall.
