Life and Work with Sarah Tousignant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Tousignant.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Hello! I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist since 2011. I have several years of salon management experience, as well as a barbering apprenticeship that I have done for two years. I graduated from Montachussett Regional Vocational Technical School as a licensed cosmetologist. My favorite things to do are corrective colors, balayage, Keratin treatments, men’s haircuts, and bridal updos! When I am not busy in the salon I love spending time outdoors, fishing, kayaking, and pampering my puppy Luke.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a successful hairstylist is a bumpy road. They can only teach you so much in school and the rest you learn from experience and continuing education classes. My advice that I would give to anyone starting out in the Cosmetology field is to work as an assistant under another stylist. You learn so much from this 1 on 1 relationship. Another piece of advice is to not give up when you are first starting. This type of job you will start at the bottom and slowly work your way up. It takes a couple of years to be fully booked all the time. So, don’t get discouraged!

Please tell us about New Outlooks Hair Salon.
My favorite thing to do in the salon is balayage and updos! I love them because both require an artistic vision and no two styles can be exactly alike! I also love that they complement each other. A balayage looks awesome to bring out the curls in an updo and an updo brings out the dimension of colors in a balayage. Also, I love getting to know my clients, I love building relationships with different people and a lot of them have turned into great friends. I have clients that range from 15 to 95 and it makes my day when I get to give them a makeover and see how happy they are afterwards. Most of my clients are now Facebook friends and we even get each other gifts during the holidays.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I don’t have many books or apps that I am into but I do love YouTube! Even as a professional there is so much you can learn from other people! It helped me a lot when I was starting out my career. My favorite people I watch on YouTube are Sam Villa and Guy Tang! They are both amazing stylists and have taught me so much throughout my career. I even met Guy Tang before at one of his amazing classes and I totally fangirled on him!
