Life and Work with Roz Raskin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roz Raskin.

Roz, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
NOVA ONE is a musically project that started a few years back in my hometown of Providence, RI. Most of the music I wrote in the last two years reflects recent transitions and movement in my life. The project explores explores youth, feminity, and gender through a moody 60’s pop lens.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We live in a patriarchal society so I think it’s safe to say it hasn’t been a smooth road for many femme-presenting people existing and making art in the world. I identify as a non-binary womxn. My advice for younger folks is to be true to yourself and to use your voice because your voice is special and important and can change the world.

Please tell us about NOVA ONE.
I am a touring musician, a music teacher, and I also spend a lot of my time being a board member for Girls Rock! Rhode Island. In terms of NOVA ONE, I think I am most proud of representing myself in a way that feels good and empowering. Also, wigs and costumes are fun and are a big part of our live show.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think the sky is the limit for women and femme presenting people, let’s break that glass ceiling.
