Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Martin.
Patty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved up to Boston from Texas in 2006 straight of hair school and I knew there was so much for me to learn. I was lucky enough to move into an upcoming neighborhood in Southie and found an apprenticeship at Shag. I started from the bottom and worked my way up. I got recruited into education to help grow our apprentice color program. From there, I FELL in LOVE with education. The only way I knew I can grow as a stylist is to constantly learn and to keep education active I have to teach. After teaching all over New England with Davines for 6 years, I was accepted in their regional artistic team 30 of the top educators and artist around USA and Canada. After having my son in 2014 and returning from my maternity leave, I realized I needed to make a change. I needed to find a way I can have harmony in being a wife, mom, stylist, and educator. That’s when I decided to leave and open my own salon with the help and courage of my husband, Josh. He spent endless hours on making a business plan, meeting banks, contractors and my constant motivator to do this. We knew love and mercy was going to be something special in Boston. We have a talented curated team from our apprentice’s to master stylist. Sustainabilty is important to us so we work with a program called green circles who help divert from landfills up to 95% of salon waste. We want to stand out with our honest hospitality to make everyone feel welcomed and at ease.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been tough because being a new mom and wanting to leave my then kind of steady job was nuts! I knew it was my dream to open a salon and realize no time is a good time I JUST had to do too! Of course, it was hard as fuck but, if it was easy everyone would be doing it. I’m proud I did it because every time I walk into my beauty salon covered in plants and happy people, it gives me the reassurance that I’m glad I did it and they’re glad I did it too!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with LOVE AND MERCY – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in COLOR. I’m known for giving people Dimensional color from blondes, brunettes to purple and pink hair. Most of my new client’s request is getting more dimension and movement and finding the right tone that suites them and their lifestyle.
We’re a davines concept salon so we carry ALL their color line and products from shampo/styling and scalp and conditioning treatments. They are a high-end Italian company who prides in beauty and sustainability.
Green circles – they collect, recycle &repurpose our hair clippings, used foil color tubes excess color. They divert them from landfills and waterways. We charge 2.00$ ECO fee to make our services sustainable.
We worked with a local company called recover roofs who maintenance our in house plants (green wall and cascading on our pillars) that promote clean air and they just make us happy seeing the grow and flourish with us.
Who have you been inspired by?
I’ve had so many of them who have impacted my life. My mom who always stood up for herself even if it wasn’t ladylike. My sisters who are some of the best educators to young kids who thrive and cherish on seeing little brains grow. My girlfriends who tell me I work too much and make me take time off. All the successful woman salon owners who helped me out with advice or a temporary home while I was building out love and mercy and still growing.
