Life and Work with Paige Talbot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Talbot.

Paige, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I said for years, I wanted to be a cosmetologist, but it wasn’t until the passing of my mother in early 2012 that finally made me realize I had to stop only living in the now and worry about my future. Her passing was a wake up call for me. I wasn’t going to be stuck working at PS gourmet Coffee forever just making it by. Being born and raised in South Boston, I refused to be another statistic of what people believe Southie people to be. I needed to make a name for my self. In beauty school, I began my famous hashtag #BookWithPaigeTalbot and landed a job assisting at Nuture Salon And Spa where I still am 5 years later. I cleaned bowls, swept hair off the floors, and assisted stylist when need be. On my down time unlike other assistants who were glued to their phones I watched stylists as they cut, styled and colored. I graduated Empire Beauty School in May and by July I had my own chair. A few months later, I was booking in like crazy, and now you have to prebook your appointment when you leave or call at least 6-8 weeks in advance to get an appointment with me. Although I miss my mother daily, I don’t believe I would be where I am today without the wake up call of her passing and I will forever be grateful for that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The world smooth doesn’t exist in my vocabulary unless it involves a blow dry. Shortly after my mother’s passing, 90 days to be exact, my sister lost her fiancé, the love of her life. They were together for 13 years. I was devastated, he was pretty much my father figure since my father had a heroin habit and was in and out of jail. I had to be strong although I was the youngest and my sister Michelle was now my mother figure I had to pick the pieces up for her. I’m 26 years old and I have 23 prayer cards only 3 which are not overdose. Which are all in the past 5 years. Thankfully, growing up watching both parents struggle with addiction my self and three siblings stayed away from drugs, and I’m beyond lightyears thankful for that. My advice for anyone who had addict parents, family or close friends is that you can’t blame your self for their behavior and you can’t change a person you’ll only end up with Grey hair trying then you’ll be in my chair trying to cover them. We need to use our everyday battles to put one foot in front of the other. We can not become what is around us.

Please tell us about #BookWithPaigeTalbot Nurture Salon & Spa .
I am a cosmetologist, specifically colorist although I do cut I have a soft spot for a good color job. I love color corrections and educating clients. I also exceed in special effect FX makeup and Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. I love being able to make people feel not only confident but beautiful when they leave my chair. I’m so proud of how much knowledge my clients are able to retain from me. I’m most proud of how big and far I have come in a short 5 years and my boss Susan owner of Nurture says she’s never seen someone build so fast. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I honestly put my heart and soul into my clients and genuinely love what I do and when you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like women can do whatever they put their minds to. My mother always told me not to let anyone ever tell you different. If you want something goes for it. I believe a woman can have more of an impact telling stories and trying to change lives because we wear our hearts on our sleeves. I do think woman need to come together to stop the photoshop on pictures and being more natural we need to stop following every move the Kardashian’s make and show these young girls that it’s okay to not be a size 0 and not have lips that take up a quarter of your face. We need to come together and be better influencers on the younger generations.
