Life and Work with Michelle DeVoe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle DeVoe.

Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a love for beauty and fashion. As a kid, I imagined I would live in Paris as a fashion designer! After school fun consisted of makeovers on my friends… it was a natural transition into the beauty industry for me. After several years of freelancing, I decided I needed “a place for clients to me with me”. At the time, I didn’t realize I was actually starting a business. In my mind, it was just a “space”. My work involved various fashion shows, photo shoots, and weddings. As the years went on, I found myself getting busier with weddings and needed to build a team of artists to help all of our brides… I’ve been in business for over 20 years now and feel blessed to have been chosen to be a part of so many special days!

Has it been a smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles, in the beginning, was not having any business experience or a plan in place. There wasn’t a start and end time. You are always working. Now, years later, my struggle is balancing work time and family time. I think the number one piece of advice I would give someone starting out is follow your gut! Don’t over analyze the details. Pay attention to how you feel in situations. Secondly, I would urge anyone to find your tribe! Entrepreneurship can be lonely. They don’t have to be doing the same thing as you, but if you can find people on a similar journey, the support and encouragement can be life changing!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with your business – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I like to call myself a beauty and bliss cultivator! I specialize in bridal beauty and am most known for creating elegant, classic looks that will stand the test of time. I am most proud of the way I can make others feel about themselves. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to connect with women and have them tell you their insecurities and strengths. I love being able to make every woman feel like her most beautiful self! I think what sets me apart from others is that my goal is to create an experience people that goes way beyond lashes and lipstick. I am also very proud to have been in business for over 20 years and recently winning Best of Boston.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Growing up, I had two amazing, hard-working parents that instilled a strong work ethic in me. I remember working a part-time job in the beginning and they offered me a full-time position making good money with benefits, etc. I actually considered it and my dad looked at me like I was speaking another language… “what about your business?” He said… I was raised with a never quit attitude and I’m so grateful for that!
